I contemplated to myself for a long time if to even write this review. However, I think the circumstances merit one. This was my first time going to a curly hair salon (on 10/29). Unfortunately, I’ve had bad experiences before in other hair salons catered towards mainly straight hair and upon seeing the countless good reviews and the amazing work by the stylists, I decided to give it a go. They had a promotion of highlights, a curly haircut, and treatment for $299 so I thought this was a sign and immediately booked an appointment. I was greeted with great care, the atmosphere and attention was absolutely delightful. My stylist, Klarissa, asked me of my previous experiences and what I wanted to do with my hair. I mentioned that I usually do my own hair due to not trusting others to do it. I said I wanted to keep some length as I do not like short hair and did not want to look like a “mushroom”. I will be honest, I bleached my own hair once this year (in July) and I will attach a photo of what my hair looked like two weeks prior to the hair appointment. My hair was of course damaged due to the bleach but it did not damage my curl pattern. I mentioned I did not want to go “too light” due to not wanting my hair to be severely damaged and my stylist agreed and said it would be lightened “in a healthy way.” Upon hearing those words, I had all the trust in the world. I did not notice anything strange during my haircut, although my hair was cut shorter than I would have liked, but I just dismissed it, as hair grows back. My stylist’s care was great till the end and I liked my initial results, although my curls did seem looser than usual. I washed my hair a couple days after my appointment and styled it as I usually do. Sections of my hair do not curl anymore and the frizz is unbelievable. My hair is incredibly damaged around those spots and no masks or treatments I do can seem to fix it. My stylist’s response was that this “dryness” was normal as my hair had been damaged prior but did not acknowledge the damage done. I genuinely did not think this would happen and would have rather had my stylist tell me that my hair being damaged could be an outcome or even tell me that she couldn’t lighten my hair without compromising it. I would have immediately agreed and would have rather not done the highlights. Instead, all I heard was that it would be lightened in a quote unquote healthy way. After noticing the damage, I asked for some recommendations of products that could perhaps fix my hair but my stylist would not give a recommendation of an actual product and just provided generic descriptions of what my hair needed and offered that I book a treatment. My hair kept getting worse and worse after the days passed so I washed it and styled it again to the same result. Then my coworker mentioned that my hair was very uneven, something I hadn’t noticed. And in fact, my hair was so uneven that the left side of my hair was several inches longer than the right side. My stylist did not acknowledge the terrible cut either and only said that she would “make any adjustments to the cut if needed.” “IF”!! How would it be “if needed” if one side of my hair is so much longer than the other. At no point did my stylist acknowledge or take accountability for the results of my hair. I genuinely did not expect to come out of the hair salon needing more hair care than I ever did due to the services received. I’ve had to buy multiple products to treat my hair and I had to cut it properly myself due to it being so uneven that I was ashamed to walk around with my hair like that. My hair is damaged to the point that I cry every time I look in the mirror. What bothers me the most is the lack of accountability. The stylist’s work is amazing and so is her care so I’m not sure what went wrong, however, as human beings we have our off days and I guess the day of my appointment was just...
Read moreI'm going to preface this review with the detail that I've been following the CG method in some way for at least 15 years. I also have friends who are stylists and have worked in enough salons to fend for myself in terms of both cut and color but always trust bleaching to professionals.
My appointment actually took place about 20 minutes later than scheduled as she was running late with the previous client. With that being said I paid $150 for the Curly Crown Experience with Klarissa and told her my goals were volume and she could take off upto 4 inches as necessary. She told me she'd cut 2 inches and I agreed and went along with it. She detangled and cut my hair and finished me in a seated dryer which was cool but definitely didn't bring me the volume I had hoped. While sitting there drying she proceeded to cut her next client in an adjacent chair.
Although I tipped her fairly and appreciated the service I left feeling like I didn't really get what I had paid for but also know curly hair reacts oddly to cutting, so I have spent about 3 weeks trying to see if I liked it and unfortunately I wish she had bit the bullet and cut the up to 4 inches. Today I did just about that and the results are what I had hoped for with the appointment. Unfortunately they are closed today and tomorrow and I couldn't go another wash day feeling flat on top and since I could, I did.
What I paid for was supposed to include "a class on how to take care of your hair from the moment it starts to the moment it ends". Aside from learning my hair was shiny and healthy I didn't learn anything. I never discussed my scalp or detail on the pH balancing treatment that was used which are also part of the experience. While I understand the ladies in the salon are all Portuguese speaking, it would have been nice to be spoken to more versus hear the conversations I didn't really understand.
So I'm not sure if it's because my hair was healthy or because of my CG knowledge but at minimum I wouldn't recommend this salon to anyone seeking volume at the root. As it seems that's fairly standard for flatish roots based on the after pictures I have seen and my own experience. My fault for not noticing before the appointment but something curly ladies should know. I have fine but heavy hair that's a mixture of type 3 curls. I was really hoping this would be a great alternative to self cutting or driving an hour home to see my girl but clearly not so much.
Hairflip is after leaving the appointment, picture of back is the next day after my first wash and style attempt and last picture is today after cutting and styling myself. Hair cut off myself was using the...
