Historic Athens — Local services in Athens-Clarke County Unified Government

Historic Athens is an active agent in the Athens, Georgia community working to conserve its heritage. This 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization assists the community in its appreciation of the dignity and immeasurable worth of historic neighborhoods, buildings and heritage in Athens.

I personally became aware of Historic Athens after attending their First Annual Athens Mardi Gras Masquerade and meeting the inspiring, enthusiastic team behind this organization headed by Tommy Valentine. Historic Athens is not only one of the most vital organizations in Athens, it has become essential. The number of people who are actively engaged with it has expanded tremendously in the past five years and its lectures, panels, and other events are well attended by a wide range of diverse and enthusiastic citizens. The term "historic" includes not only stewardship of the past but also collaborations with some of Athens' most forward thinking citizens with the goal of improving the overall quality of life for everyone.
