Hometown Grocery — Local services in Athens

I love this place! Friendly workers. Excellent selection of various products. They don't carry omeprazole but there's a Dollar General in the same parking structure that DOES. Prices vary on the item but most items are fairly cheap and they have a 5 for $25 deal on meats and other acceptable items. EBT is accepted on most items. Always has a large milk selection...I don't think I've EVER seen them low on milk. 😂 Eggs of every variety. Breads of every kind. Full drink selection. And they have simple t-shirts for kids and adults for $1! They no longer cash certain checks due to people being greedy and trying to trick them by taking a pic of their check and cashing it via mobile banking and taking the ACTUAL check and cashing it with them as well. So I get it. There's a little check cashing place in the same structure as well it is the business beside the antique/furniture store closest to the road. There's also a Redstone if you cross over Highway 72 at the Burger King light though...its less than 6 min away and It's on the left past the gas station and KFC. Locally small town grocery store, and if you live in Athens AL. you know the place I'm sure. We as a family have always shopped here they used to have very good quality food and meats , however the last few times we went I bought meats, cause I love firing up the smoker and cooking some good food for any occasion lol, but when I opened the meats they smelled like rotten eggs and it was multiple packs of pork chops and ribs , had some kind of nasty grady white substance on them and smelled like 3 day old rotten eggs !! So just a warning if you get the meats its a possability you may have a similar experience lol and thats not fun when you drop 50 dollars on meats and throw away 5 packs of the ten you bought!! Other than that it is a great grocery store been around d a long time and I'm sure whatever was wrong they are taking care of it as for me I just wont buy no meats from there for a couple months give them some time to figure...

The owners are great. Prices are alright. They have some good sales. Bathrooms are not always the cleanest which I can't blame on the workers. They can't be everywhere. I put the blame on the public. People go in there and make a huge mess often. It has been that way for years. I wonder what type of people want to go in and trash these public restrooms that are there to serve us, the public. I wonder if these people have children because when I carry my child on there and the bathroom is torn to shreds and has filth all over I have to get my child to either hold it, (which they can't always do) or I have had to clean up the mess myself.
