Moving and finding a new provider for something as personal as your hair can be hard. I moved to Austin from New York during COVID, and initially had a hard time finding a colorist who would listen to what I’d like to achieve and be realistic about the steps to get there. It’s been a long-time goal of mine to eventually try out vivids, and through some network suggestions I’d wound up finding Kaity Kovar (@colorbykaity).

Kaity is, out of the five to ten stylists/colorists I’d talked with, the only one who had offered a throughout consultation with timelines and transparency to meet my goals. I’d felt like so many other people I’d spoken with had given me wishy washy answers, or flat out made my hair colors that I was downright unhappy with. She was honest and forthcoming about the work and care needed, which is super easy to forget as we scroll socials and find things we like.

I’ve been working with Kaity for over two years now and would absolutely recommend working with her no matter where you are in your color journey. While I’m no longer a vivid girl, I look forward to every appointment. She treats clients as friends and exemplifies professionalism, kindness, and empathy. Kaity actively communicates every step of her process keeping you in the loop of what’s going on, where your money is going, and you really leave her chair feeling like a rockstar every time.

Koko and Jena are hair GODDESSES. These women go above and beyond to make me and my hair feel special. Koko is patient and meticulous, mixing the exact right color for my very dark hair without it looking black. She is also consistent and precise when applying my color, achieving the exact look I have in mind. She helped me during my pandemic gray phase and dyed my virgin hair back to life. Watching Koko apply color is what I imagine Michaelangelo looked like painting the Sistine Chapel. No strand is skipped and the blending is seamless. I can’t recommend Koko enough for whatever your coloring needs are; she’s a genius!

Jena is a magician. I brought her my heavy, thick, wily mop of hair after the pandemic and she made me into a new woman. After measuring my head and observing my natural hair growth patterns she asked me specific questions about how often I wash my hair, and what with, and what goals I have for my hair. With all this information she got to work like a lady Edward Scissorhands, cutting and styling my head into a work of art. I’m very particular about my hair and Jena goes out of her way to accommodate me. She marries whatever lofty idea I have in my head with an achievable cut and style. Since the first time I sat in her chair, she’s helped me discover 15 new ways to wear my bangs and I am forever grateful. To my fellow lifelong bang girls out there: you need Jena.

My first time at Ladybird Society was beyond amazing. The ambiance- 10/10. Snacks, coffee, beverages, comfortable and gorgeous atmosphere. The stylists- 10/10. Everyone was kind, focused on their clients and collaborative. Koko- 200/10. She helped me fix my hair in a tight timeline. She was patient, kind, accepting, thoughtful, honest and she considered and laid out every option for me before we did ANYTHING. She knew I had anxiety and let me ask every question, share every concern and explain my hair history and needs. She asked other stylists for their input on a plan for my hair. She showed me color options and explained in detail what she was thinking and what both a short term and long term plan would be. She is a color specialist and REALLY good at what she does. She took her time and kept me updated on every step.

After intense bleaching of my own at home… she helped me blend my roots and take out some banding at my crown . It looks SO much better. Her hands…. That scalp rub was divine. And her blowout … chefs kiss.

I could not thank her enough. AND she gave me a little goodie bag with conditioner, shampoo and conditioner options, a hair clip and a comb and mirror!
