First impressions, it had a nice driveway. That is the only nice thing I could say. I arrived early to a golf outing in June 2024 and I went to the putting green to practice. Out of nowhere a large fat man, weighing no less than 350lbs, rushes out and begins to yell "get off the putting green!" So I picked up my balls and began to move, when a second, just as large man yelled the same thing. I understood the instructions the first time and I was in complete compliance with no argument. To my defense there were no signs posted, nowhere did it say not to use the putting green between these hours, it was some unknown arbitrary rule. Again, no issue there, I was instructed where to use a putting green that was about 200 yards away. The second putting green was in poor shape. Large weeds, dirt patches, unmaintained, in total disrepair, why they'd recommend that one is beyond me.

Registration time came, and it was utter confusion. There was one manned table in front of the clubhouse which you'd believe would be for adults, think again, child registration. Unbeknownst to anyone the adult registration table was around back, go figure right? No signs posted of course. The table that needed the most exposure that serviced 95% of the population was unmarked. We registered, bought raffle tickets, and helped ourselves to "breakfast," which consisted of 1 dozen of Dunkin' donuts and about 2 dozen bagels. No coffee, water, juice, ect... We then helped ourselves to a sleeve of golf balls and a towel, which was loosely thrown on a table and not marked leading to more confusion if they were for players.

A short speech was given and we were given the go ahead to start, however no one knew where to go. We knew which holes to be at, but we had no idea how to get there. Again no signage or leader. We drove around until we found a hole and tried to navigate from there however, the hole plaques were all missing! We'd find the tee box marked with the blue, white, and red balls, however no plaque. It was maddening. After using the not-to-scale map on the back of the scorecard we found the hole. The problem is everyone got separated and we spent the next 10 min waiting for our group.

Finally we were at the start of golf. The course was deplorable. June in CT isn't horrible, the heat of summer is on our door steps but green grass is still easy to maintain. CT just had a wet spring and we'd still get consistent rain. This place had no green grass. My house has greener grass with no watering and just fertilizer. The ground keeper should really be ashamed and embarrassed. Getting the tee in the ground was a job in of itself. How possibly was it that hard?! It rained days leading up and we had record rain. The fairways were just the same hard dirt almost concrete texture. At the end of each hole it was a challenge to find the next because nothing was marked. The bunkers were no longer sandy and just a hole with overgrown grass. Really poor conditions, I mean when there's no sand in bunkers you know it's not good.

On to lunch. Supposedly, there was a sign to notify golfers at the end of the White 9th hole that lunch was served, if you saw the sign. It wasn't just me that missed it, my whole team missed it! And not just our team, numerous teams missed it! From what I heard it wasn't anything great, hamburgers that resembled hockey pucks and hotdogs that dogs refused to eat. Take it for what it's worth, I never actually ate it because, you know, we didn't see the sign. Now that I think of it, that'd be something to announce at the introduction. Usually there's a bag lunch with snacks and drinks, not here.

The raffle prizes were picked when everyone was golfing. No way to cheat there, although there were multiple duplicate winners that were organizers of the event now that I think of it.

FYI Avon, CT average household income $200k. Some top earners in tens and hundreds of millions. This place played like it should have a box at the entrance for donations. What a joke. Charging anything is absurd. It felt like the forgotten...

Absolutely terrible experience. I’ve played here 4 times this year and never had a reason to want to never come back until having a running with the course ranger.

Absolute BELLEND. To set the scene, my friend and I played 18 with another friend joining at the turn for the back 9(not a crazy thing to do) we had been given two golf carts for the third person to join us once he arrived. We meet him to find he has been given a cart as well(not our fault and entirely the responsibility of Cart management(the starter and ranger as well as the person in the clubhouse). So we think OK, no big deal and start to play. Only to find once we started the back 9 that the ranger had allowed a group of TEN people (5 carts) to play in front of us, not a tournament or outing, just a random party of 10 on arguably the busiest day of the week. Course was already packed, so this just made things worse. Being good sports, we ignored the ignorance of this decision on BFR’s part(idiotic) and continued on.

We arrive at the 5th hole to tee off and the waste of space that is the course ranger decides to come up to us as as we are set to tee off and goes “uh why do you have 3 carts for 3 people....” we answer him politely, now to remind you that when you pay for your round you pay for the green fees and cart which covers things like gas and maintenance, etc. standard...

He proceeds to sneer and give us a look as he drives away but not without first adding “yeah it’s a big waste of gas.”

I don’t think I’ve ever been more livid that someone who makes their living from serving others had the gall to say something so egregious to the people that pay his salary.

I have now discovered what the policy and business strategy of BFR is: nothing more than bottom line over customer satisfaction. The happiness of guests(being smart about sending out a party of 10 on a busy Sunday, instead of bothering to complain about $1.50 worth of gas for the extra cart)

Clearly this is a shining example of why your course has seen a drop in numbers. Maybe instead of playing the course while acting as course ranger you’d have a better hold on what occurred on your course.

Will definitely not be returning nor will anybody I know. I will also be making sure I bring my business (I play 3-4 times a week and work/live locally) to a more customer friendly and better maintained course.

ALSO: instead of complaining about the extra cart being out and you acting all high and mighty as if your course is Torrey pines, maybe you could be spending your time more wisely like ensuring the greens aren’t covered in leaves and acorns. Get your leaf blower out and get to work buddy. Its ridiculous for a golf course that caters to the type of clients like yours does...

I play here once or twice a week when the season is open, and I feel like alot of these reviews are over the top. They got new carts last year which are beautiful, the twighlight price can't be beat especially because many times they just let you play as many holes as you can get in. The layout is awesome, though if you're not familiar with it can be confusing. As for the conditions, yes unfortunately people are right, when we don't get much rain the fairways on the white and red courses do burn out and are hard, but Im not sure they have an irrigation system on them. The blues are generally lush. The Tee boxes are fine my only qualm there would be they don't have good yardage indicators, but everyone uses course books or phone applications anyway and if you don't have/use a yardage scope than you are likely one of the people slowing down...
