Oriental Food Market — Local services in Baton Rouge

We just moved here and stopped by to check out the selection. First, the lady working there was awesome. She was really nice and even spent a lot of time telling us about living in Baton Rouge after we told her we are new here. Second, I was really impressed with their selection and prices. I’m Asian American and lived in big cities and small towns. In my experience Asian shops in places like Baton Rouge that do not have a huge H-mart either have a limited selection of nothing or charge you an arm and a leg for everything. This place has everything we would need and doesn’t ridiculously price gouge. Their kimchi prices are comparable to prices we paid in our prior city’s large Korean supermarkets. This was my first, and definitely last time shopping at this store. I regret ever walking in. There is absolutely no price transparency: items have no price tags, and the receipt doesn’t break down the cost of each item. I ended up paying over $40 for just five items that cost half as much at other Asian grocery stores nearby.

The lack of upfront pricing and inflated costs is deceptive and predatory. I truly want to support small businesses, especially Asian-American owned ones, but unethical practices like this are unacceptable. It’s no wonder the store was empty.

Oriental Food store is a wonderful cultural experience! You can find everything you need there to make delicious Asian food at home. The proprietor, Lee, is so friendly and full of knowledge, and she's happy to share it with her customers.
