Cabin 4
Cathys Cabin was a good place fo us to to stay in. It was affordable, good location- easy access to the main road that takes us into town thats just a few min away. And a 7/11 gas station is close by- very convenient. The hot tub was super nice and worked so well, after a long hike it was very relaxing and therapeutic! Parking is easy too. Cabin 4 is great for two people, we made use of the table and little kitchen area. We really liked that there are two sinks in the cabin and that there’s a lot of windows with good outdoor lighting.
Speaking of windows there is something we would like to share to anyone considering staying here. If you are sensitive to smells or have allergies, this cabin will not work for you. I am not usually sensitive to smells but this room smells very strong of cigarette smoke. We tried leaving the door open, we opened windows, we put a good smelling bubble bath jell in the tub but nothing helped with the strong cigarette smoke smell. I struggled to sleep at night because I was so congested, and as soon as I’d walk outside I could breath again but being inside the room kept my nose running and sneezing. What could help is to bring a candle with you or maybe Cathys cabin people can remove the couch that sits in the middle of the room. The couch smells really concentrated of cigar smoke, after we sat on it for a bit we smelled of cigar smoke too, so we tried to avoid touching it after that.
Something we did to make our stay more comfy was to move the couch that was in the middle of the room and walk way, we pushed it agains a wall because we kept running into it at night or walking in circles during the day. We did put the furniture back where we found it when we left. The bed was perfectly situated and so comfortable! There were dark curtains in the room so there was no light to bother our sleep. We really liked that this cabin isn’t sharing walls with the neighboring cabin, it feels more homey and not like an apartment, we appreciated the privacy.
It really is a nice and clean place to stay in when you’re visiting Big Bear Lake. Next time we will ask Cathy for extra towels since we used the tub every day and showered sometimes twice per day after hiking or swimming in the lake.
Note- no AC but it wasn’t needed, the weather was perfect. Fireplace was there but gain, we didn’t...
Read moreWe booked unit C7 in this quaint cottage based on other reviews and pictures and a reasonable price. The unit was cozy and provided our basic needs, and fortunately one of I believe two units with an air conditioner, due to outside noise and not wanting to open the windows. I missed the fine print on the reservation that said the office check-in is 4 miles back from where I came and had to go there to get the key, and the cottages are further from the Village than I had realized, so my mistake there. ||||Getting inside was tough because the key barely jiggled into the lock, and once inside we noticed two lights out in the ceiling fan and that the TV remote would not change channels. I called the office and was told they would come by later, but after a couple of hours we needed to go to dinner, so they came by while we were out, dropped off the wrong type of bulbs, and didn't even enter the unit to fix the TV issue, so stuck with PBS all night. The next day we rode in the Tour de Big Bear and upon returning contacted the office again and finally got somebody to fix the remote and the lights. The only ice is a very small ice bin in the freezer and their note that an ice machine is available appears to mean back near the office, because there is not one at the cottages.||||The A/C unit is very small and takes a long time to cool the unit, but once cooled it was comfortable and the A/C noise helps mask the noise of the street traffic and home next door where people drank outside and talked until midnight one night.||||There are four pillows, two extra firm and two firm, so if you like a softer pillow like we do, they are very uncomfortable.||||The staff is very pleasant and the unit is quaint and has everything you need, but too noisy, uncomfortable pillows, and needing to coordinate service and basics like an ice machine back at the office, and taking a day to fix our TV issue are why we rated the...
Read moreCathy's Cottages has to be the best deal in the Big Bear area. I stayed in the Aviators Room #8. This room has a very comfortable pillow top queen bed, a sofa and coffee table, a dining table along with a microwave, fridge, and a coffee maker and coffee. There are dishes in the cabinet, complete with salt and pepper dispensers. There is also a fold down Murphy bed that allows the room to accommodate 4 adults or you can bring the kids. The gas fireplace was also a very enjoyable feature. The bathroom is large and has a nice size stall shower. Perhaps the most impressive thing is how clean the unit was. The cleaning crew does a great job. I had a friend come up on Sunday to visit for the day and he was really impressed with the place. We also met the owner Bob, who was at the property on Sunday doing some maintenance, and enjoyed talking with him. I was interested to see the room Grandma's Attic, so he took us upstairs to see it. It is small but a very cozy setup with excellent use of space. As far as being located in Big Bear City it is still really close to everything as you can be up to the Village in 10 minutes. The Cottages really have a comfortable feel of home and are a great place from which to enjoy the mountain setting of Big Bear. I enjoyed it so much, I have already reserved the Aviator room for the end of May. I plan to try the various cottages over time and bring my Mom up...
