It has been officially 3 months since our parents have relocated from their beloved home to the assisted living community at American House Boynton Beach--I only wish they could have moved sooner! Each and every step of the process was managed with compassion and attention to detail. As I and my brother both live out-of-state, it was crucial that the coordination 'on-the-ground' be reliably managed. The staff have gone beyond the call to make this extremely difficult transition not only manageable, but actually enjoyable (and our parents are not the easiest folk to deal with). I am thrilled to see our Mom, finally doing something other than sleeping and sitting around - She is thriving meeting new friends and attending the activities. While our Dad is the 'resistant type', he has also been settling in to his new home with the help of a ridiculous amount of patience from AH's amazing staff.
We had put a deposit on their apartment nearly 2 years prior when the facility was initially being built. Frustratingly, there were delays including a change in ownership. Despite this, the transition staff of Ken and Jillian were amazing and available up to an including their eventual move-in date. I don't know how she does it all, but Judy the nurse manager has been simply amazing seeing to our parents' every need from healthcare to housekeeping management. The concierges Javia and Joellena work tirelessly to field all issues and questions. Recreational director Sadora has planned the most wonderful events including live music, parties, games and the beloved daily movies in the lovely theater. Poor O'neil runs himself ragged dealing with anything that needs fixing and my Dad's often irrelevant complaints LOL. I don't know the names of their aides but they have also been fantastic.
Our parents have a two-bedroom/two-bathroom apartment that includes kitchen and living room areas - It is quite spacious in my opinion. Pluses include THREE separate temperature controls and a/c units for the living area and each bedroom. They have their own separate WiFi in apartment and the TV from Hotwire is excellent as is Peter who is the rep who manages it. Their laundry is done in the apartment in their own stacked washer/dryer which is a pro in that they don't take their clothes to the community laundry. There is one downside and that is that the washer/dryer are extremely noisy. Many of the residents have complained about it but really I don't see how they can do anything about it. Just thought you should be aware.
The food at the dining room is really excellent - I've had a few meals there and was impressed with not only the variety and creative choices but the taste since I had low expectations in an 'industrial' setting. Not everything was great but I can see the efforts being made by the chef. Mom and Dad can eat anytime they want in the dining room since they have 'flexible dining' rather than set times everyone has to go there. They say they love the food but they are not "foodies" FYI.
Mom and Dad have their beds made and linens cleaned daily and it is always tidy and clean in the apartment. Also Mom receives help bathing and dressing and she looks better than ever. She also has received salon services including haircut, color, styling and mani/pedi all fantastic. Dad needs more assistance but is a bit resistant to allowing the aides to bathe him. They are patient with him and I'm sure he'll come around.
Both Mom and Dad have cognitive impairments but are not in need of Memory Care at present. But this option is available should the need arise.
As it has only been 3 months, I intend to post an update at some point. I am fully aware that new facilities can start strong and the quality of care can decrease over time. For now, I...
Read moreMy family member had a terrible experience in this facility. He went into Memory Care at the end of April and by the end of June I had to move him to another facility. Yes, it’s a big shiny new place and they make lots of big promises, but don’t deliver. I must tell you, Karen in Memory Care is awesome and caring, but it ends there as far as this facility, and she deserves to work in a better place in my opinion. The director Renata Leroy once you’ve moved in good luck seeing her or getting anything accomplished with her, she’s invisible! During my family members stay there the nurse sent him to the emergency room two times, mind you this man has Alzheimer’s disease. The first time was because she couldn’t get a urine sample from him so they sent him alone to the emergency room. The second time was for diarrhea which wound up in a four day hospital stay because he was so agitated and upset when he was there that they kept him and American House didn’t want him to come back until he was more stable. After four days there in the hospital, he then had to go to rehab for 3 days. This was all unnecessary for those items that should’ve been handled by their nursing staff, but was not. They do have a nurse who is not there around the clock and also often hard to get in touch with. So after Rehab, I realized American House was not the place for him he needed better care medically so I moved him to Arden Courts in Delray Beach where they have round the clock nursing and assured me they would never send an Alzheimer patient to the hospital for a urine sample or diarrhea. These are things that would be handled in the house. There was also an incident of him getting out of the facility and the staff could not get him back in so they had to call the police, this is a busy location Boynton Beach Blvd. and jog. So now I have paid a $4000 community fee to move him in there (nonrefundable, even though he was only there two months) And you have to give a 30 day written notice or pay another months rent unless they need a greater level of care which obviously he did. I wrote the letter explaining to the administrator Renata Leroy, what the situation was. Then I spoke to her in person face-to-face last week and told her I didn’t want the ACH to come out of the bank account for that month that he was not going to be there which would be July. She said it would not but lo and behold two days ago they put through the ACH and took over $7500 out of the bank account for July. And once again, she’s impossible to get in touch with. Please spare yourself and your family member the aggravation and look...
Read moreWORTH THE WAIT! WORTH THE READ! Deciding on an assisted living facility in South Florida can be quite the headache. So many places out there to choose from. After visiting American House over a year ago we just knew we had to wait them out to open. Our sales rep, Ken, was unbelievably kind and helpful throughout this time. I sent so many emails and visited so many times and he was always able to answer any questions my family had thrown his way. Now that they have opened we are thrilled to have gone with our gut. The facility has so much to offer. Judy and her nursing staff go above and beyond to help with the needs of my mother in law while ALSO greeting my children any time they see them. Sadora is unbelievable with her desire to get the residents out and about. Her social skills are impressive and can engage any resident! Jamie and O'Neil work hard to keep the facility clean and in working order. Chef Vic is attentive to all the residents cuisine recommendations, although he doesn't need any help! His staff in the kitchen is friendly as well. Let me also mention Javia at the front desk in my long review here. She is truly out of this world. Greeting is not her only gift. She has a way with the residents and family for sure. She makes us feel like our mom is safe and cared for by EVERYONE who works there. If you read this whole review I'm sure you have the time to go check out this facility! Congrats on your opening...
