Having lived in St. Mary, I know how expensive and difficult it is to get shipments of anything out there in the middle of nowhere. This little grocery store was a godsend while I was living nearby, as it's the only real grocery store around. The closest big grocery store is 30 miles away in Browning, which many tourists prefer to avoid.
So yes, it is expensive. Everything in the microscopic town of St. Mary is reasonably expensive because it is so isolated. Just check the price per gallon at the St. Mary gas station for proof.
Also, nearly all of the businesses in St. Mary hire SEASONALLY (April-September), and often hire students and travelers who only work there for one season. This means the customer service anywhere in the area is always a mixed bag. Try not to blame the businesses themselves if you get a rude cashier or whatever, because chances are they won't be there...
Read moreI wish there was a better way to discourage anyone from giving this place business! This is not a grocery store and definitely not a supermarket. I've encountered gas stations in the middle of Kansas with better selections than this place. When I saw that their produce was wrinkly, old, and consisted of barely more than four peppers and some baby carrots, I was equally disappointed when the canned food isle showcased chili, corn, and peas. It is frustrating that St. Mary Grocery takes advantage of its location by overpricing everything ($6.29 for a box of Triscuits) and providing incorrect prices on the shelves. They do not provide a cash back option and there is no restroom. I understand that this happens in touristy places, but this business is definitely taking advantage of GNP visitors to an...

Chicken breasts only no dark meat. 1 pound hamburger which was not dated. Several steaks and pork chops but I didn’t feel comfortable buying meat here after looking at the quality of their produce. I got the feeling everything was frozen then thawed and dated. Wound up buying a bag of egg noodles, canned peas, mushroom soup and the only plain potato chips in the store, two single serve bags. Tuna Noodle Casserole it is! On a positive note, HUGE alcohol selection. Should be called a liquor store. Definitely not a...
