Hair by Sonia — Local services in Byram

This is my first time reviewing a salon. Mostly because I have never had all good things to say. With that, I apologize ahead of time for the length of this review because I have a lot of good things to say.

First, thank God for Sonia. She is a blessing and a very kind spirit. I knew this before even meeting her in person. I contacted her by text after finding her online. She took the time to ask and answer questions; and learn about my hair care needs. When I learned that she sometimes has 15 clients in her salon, I was a bit nervous. But I saw her hair gallery on her website and wanted my hair to look like that. So, I gave her a chance. I am so happy I did!

It has been a very long time since I have had a stylist that makes me completely happy with my hair. I moved to the Jackson metro area in 2004. It has taken me 13 years to find a stylist like Sonia. She is professional, nice as can be, and prompt. How she runs her salon is nothing short of amazing! My appointment was at 4:45. She was done by 7:35. What makes this so amazing is that I counted at least 10 clients (including myself) in there at one time. Ladies, I was in and out in less than 3 hours all while she had 10 clients to take care of. But astonishingly, I never felt “rushed”. Sonia is a working professional. She understands and respects that her clients are working professionals as well. When Sonia was working on my hair, I felt like I was her only client. She gave me her full attention. The atmosphere was relaxing. Her salon had the feel of a boutique and was beautifully decorated. The chairs were all very comfortable. The shampoo was phenomenal and felt like a head massage.

I work out five days a week. The sweat, hair dryer, and flat iron made my hair thin and brittle. It looked lifeless. No other stylist has been able to bring my hair back to life. Sonia applied just the right products to make my lifeless hair beautiful and full again. She gave me a fabulous cut too. Even my husband noticed. Usually when I go to the salon, he cannot tell the difference. He could this time. Thanks to Sonia and her hair taming skills!

From the assembly line to the final product, Sonia "did dat"

My first time going was Friday after weeks of researching for the perfect stylist. I'm a natural with two textures (curly near roots and straight ends/heat damage), so I needed someone to really care for my hair. In one picture I saw a round brush being used. Unnoticed by some, but it was a good indicator for me.

She is the only stylist, but she has a shampooer and someone who blow dries (at least that's what i gathered - pretty sure they have other duties). When you first walk in you are approached with a smock and towel to prepare for the shampoo. You are called in order of arrival (assuming people keep with their appointed time). After I was shampooed I was place under the steamer with conditioner- OMG! After a rinse, I was sent to get blow dried. Y'all, this has to be the BEST blow dryer person. I'm literally considering just going for that since I go to the gym a lot and just really need a nice wash and deep conditioning every now and then. Now for the styling by Sonia -It was quick which means she is very confident in her work. She knew exactly what needed to be done. My only issue (not the fault of anyone in the salon) was that I failed to give pictures of the style i usually wear. I like my presses with a lot of curls that eventually fall, but ended up with straighter hair. In all, it still turned out amazing.

Will there be a wait? YES! She's good at what she does, so "errbody and dey momma" wants to be there, too. When I was relaxed my stylist had probably 15 heads at one time. So it didn't bother me much.

Price is the only reason for the missing star. During my consultation I was told a price range. I was a bit happy when she finish and quoted a price $5 less than what was quoted. After she stated her final price she asked me "What price range did I give you?" I clarified the range, and was charged $10 more than her initial final price. I'm accustomed to knowing the exact amount I'm paying upfront. This practice sort of opens up the door for "hair type discrimination". She takes curl pattern and length into consideration.

🚨 Long Post Alert, But Worth The Read 🚨

Prior to becoming a client of Sonia’s, I had been wearing my hair in a protective style for at least three consecutive years without allowing it a break. One day, I asked my former stylist to remove the protective style, informing her that I would be wearing my hair down for a short period to give it a rest. As of July 2025, I have received numerous compliments on how my hair is starting to look healthy again and how much it has grown. We are seeing significant improvement, and Sonia’s products are very effective.

I am grateful that I chose to give Sonia a try before investing in hair transplant surgery. I will continue this journey with her, as she demonstrates exceptional knowledge of hair care, specializes in healthy hair, and all the products she has recommended have been life changing. I use the hair follicle drops and hair growth oil daily!!
