My 'test' for furniture is to be at least well made as something made in high school shop class, like the beautiful piece my cousin made when he was 17. 99% of furniture I looked at in other stores flunked it! (Hint: Looking at the drawer construction and smoothness is a dead give-away). Stuart-David and Borkholder were the only two brands I found that passed the 'test', besides going to very expensive full custom by a local craftsmen (there is a great one in Davenport!). I have not been to the Stuart-David showroom in Ceres, but I ordered my semi-custom natural cherry bedroom set through one of Stuart David's San Jose retailers a few years ago. My furniture set is a 'Transitional' design, and goes with everything, including the pale Scandinavian modern elsewhere in the house, and grandma's dark-stained antiques, picking design elements from both.

The quality of the S-D furniture is above and beyond what you will find in any store such as Macy's, Ethan-Alan, etc. since this furniture is hand made with solid wood by real craftsmen, not some farmworkers in some far-off country thrown onto an assembly line. It is also made locally just outside of Modesto, so no big shipping charges to Central & Northern 'Bay Area' California locations. Their customer service was great. I plan to buy more furniture from them as I re-do my small home and replace the remaining 'starter' particle board and veneer furniture with items that don't fall apart in just 2 or 3 years.

Only downside is that it costs a little more, and there is the longer lead time for semi-custom furniture, while Macy's will deliver within a week (update: my Macy's leather couch needs replacement after only 3 years). For the best custom furniture hands down. And the best part is the customer service. Mark not only sells you your furniture but backs it up too. Had a lift table that was to tall. They remade table lower all at no charge Who does that these days.. Will be back and recommend to everyone. They make generational furniture because it lasts that long. They are basically a custom builder that distributes Furniture throughout the nation through dealers. They just happened to be right there in Ceres so you can buy direct from them.

I love the fact that there's so many options. You get to pick the furniture, the color, the type of wood, and the accessories and they will build it for you as you request.

The staff is noncommissioned and very friendly and helpful.
