I wanted to wait a while before I wrote my review for DJ Feathers. I purchased a Scarlet Macaw that I named Shiva. When I put a deposit down I foolishly did not research the company and just based my expectations on what other customers had said about them,
the first problem I had was I figured that they gave the customer an option to clip or not clip the wings (especially since they offer harness training) This was not the case! I asked them to refund my money and they replied saying that they would not clip the wings (PERIOD) but after I went ahead and put down the remaining 1,200.00 they then informed me that they wanted me to sign a contract making me liable for any injury or death in their store as a result of my bird being able to fly. I ended up refusing to sign that and not getting my money back, so I was stuck with only one option.... clip his wings. I am still sad to this day that I allowed them to clip his wings., it has stirred up a host of problems that I was not initially prepared for but alas I have adjusted. he on the other hand has not adjusted as well as I had hoped.
now onto second problem... He is stunted! he has very little interest in any activity that a macaw should be showing interest in at this time. he is out with me almost all day and he simply sits around with his head hung down and appearing very depressed. i am slowly getting him into new things and he is slowly coming around.
third problem they kept him in the nursery too long and when i asked why he was in there still the reply i got was well we don't have anywhere on the floor to put him. we are out of cages!!!! i was told he would be put out on the floor as soon as one of the other macaws were sold. as a result of this i see very negative habits that have formed. he is somewhat fearful of perches and instead prefers to sit on the floor or bottom of the cage.
fourth problem they offer harness training but i do not see where he was trained AT ALL. when i first brought the harness out for him, he FREAKED! i have since been able to work with him and i can finally now get one on him.
this last issue i had was with the conditions that their large birds are kept in. They are shoved into way too small cages and as a result have most of their feathers are extremely damaged! some had no tail feathers left!
i think this shop should stick with smaller breeds of birds instead of worrying about making the big bucks with macaws. they do not have the space or hands to properly socialize these birds. i regret my purchase from them with all of my heart but i do love my baby and he will never live in conditions like that again! my vet was shocked at how dull and destroyed his feathers were when i brought him into her. but thankfully he was healthy, i am giving them 2 stars only because they do seem to do well with smaller birds, shop was clean, and they seem to be somewhat good people despite being very misguided on the care and housing of...
Read moreI was very disappointed in this store. I recently moved to the area and none of the pet stores I had been to had a good selection of bird stuff, so at first I was really happy to find this place. That’s their one good quality, they have a large selection of perches and toys that I wasn’t able to find elsewhere. However, they’re pretty overpriced. The people who work here (I think it’s the owners and family) are not very helpful or friendly. They don’t greet you when you come in or talk to you at all. The store is dusty and I ran into spiderwebs getting perches off the wall. However, my main issue with this store is that they don’t take very good care of their birds. For many of the larger birds, the cages are too small. I’ve been into the store 4 times before writing this and every time, the only food the birds have available is dried fruit (there are a couple of birds that have seed available) but no pellets or anything that provides real nutrients. Several of the birds I saw looked to be overweight. The cages aren’t cleaned well, there are dead bugs in many of them and roaches. The back room where the birds are kept doesn’t have windows. It’s very sad to go in there, it hurts to see the birds in conditions like that. In the photo attached there was a bird in the cage and a roach in the bird poo...
Read moreThis is the second aviary my daughter and I visited in the same day. Night and day comparing the two. They have variety of birds but the staff I encountered caused not only confusion but lacked necessary knowledge to answer reputable questions. On top of that there was 15 mins left before closing and we were kind of told twice nicely they are closing, I did ask its 6p yes? And she said yes. We were on the fence literally on purchasing a baby cockatiel, they knew but did not seem to change the attitude of closing at regular time. (Which is fine now, cause I'm glad we didn't make a spur of the moment decision) Confusion came from I went to the front to find someone and ask about the 3 cockatiel babies in one cage, if they were available and if my daughter could hold one. The lady instructed for her to use sanitizer and they were all available. My daughter takes one out and we are playing with him for about 10 minutes when a younger worker comes over confused why we have the bird out and said these 3 are sold. Anyway a roach came out of the cage lever when we went to look at the one grey baby tiel that WAS for sale. All in all good experience, they could do better, and please do something about the roaches. I'll stick to American Bird Company...
