Giant Food — Local services in Charlottesville

Terrible experience at this location today. Went in to purchase 5 $20.00 Visa gift cards for "Employee of the Month" gifts for my staff. At the register I was told that I could only pay for the gift cards using cash or a debit card. Being that this was an office expense I was going to pay for the transaction with my Company credit card which states both the company name and my personal name. However, the cashier stopped the transaction and called over another gentlemen who (completely ill-mannered by the way) proceeded to tell me their policy was that gift cards could only be purchased using cash or a debit card. When I asked if this policy was stated anywhere in the store he said yes it was. I ended up paying for the transaction with my personal debit card (to be refunded by my office upon my return) and then walked over the the end cap containing all of the gift cards. No, there was not a single notice ANYWHERE stating their policy. I asked another staff member on my way out about the policy and she mentioned the same thing and that the vendors that refill the gift cards often remove the signs stating their policy. If this keeps happening Giant, why not invest in a permanent sign to be placed in plain view? Is this such a hard concept? Or, better yet, rather than inconveniencing your guests, why not ask for ID as verification? Yet, maybe this is too difficult of a concept for you. This is one of my go to stores for grocery shopping, however it's gone downhill over the years. They have added a healthy/natural foods section, but it's not as extensive as it could be. Their produce has been disappointing me for a while now. I feel like it's time to remodel this store. On the plus side, the manager, Rodger is great, as are most of the rest of the employees. The deli folks are very nice and manage to layer the sliced cheese for you, which for some reason seems to be a problem for a lot of the other delis in town. The seafood and meat people are also very helpful and curtious and are always there to assist you with any questions. I will raise my rating if and when they remodel this Giant. *I am raising my original rating of 3 stars to 4 because I've noticed a concerted effort to put out, and keep fresher produce lately. I haven't had a bad experience of late and feel they deserve a better rating!

I haven't been to Giant in 2 years! I split my time here and NZ. Giant hasn't changed much except I'm very happy they aren't giving away plastic shopping bags! I love this Giant store and have been going for years. The majority of the staff are so helpful and friendly. I love the location - so easy to get in/out. Prices might be a little more expensive but I think it has high quality groceries. Their store-made chicken salad brings me there so frequently - it’s so delicious!! Why the only 3 stars, you think? The staff behind the deli is outright rude. Not just not friendly but rude and argumentative. If I didn’t love the store and their chicken salad, I’d probably never go again. And it’s not just an occasional situation - it’s fairly often. I wish they had pleasant, friendly and easy to communicate with employees in the deli area and I’d give them 5 stars everyday!
