Horsepower Techs — Local services in Clinton Township

On January 22nd 2018, I took my 2014 Challenger RT in to Horse Power Tech to have an engine rebuild provided all new parts for the engine modifications. The owner, Angel, promised the engine work would take only two months to complete. Finally after waiting 7 months Angel called in late august informing me my car was ready to be picked up and it was running perfect with no problems. I picked up the car and drove it for approximately fifteen minutes. The car begin to back fire, failed to idle, and the transmission failed to shift out of second gear. Multiple warning lights turned on including the engine light, ABS light, and finally the anti-skid light.

I returned my car to Horse Power Tech and Angel made several attempts to correct the problems but failed to. Angel had the car transported to Vector Motorsports and they found lack of compression in the number 3 cylinder, refused to work on the engine, and sent it back to Horse Power Tech.

I called Vector to see if they could repair all the problems with my car. Steve at Vector agreed to take the car and to repair all problems.

When vector start looking into the problems with the motor, they discovered:

1. Cylinder #1 has significantly high carbon buildup than any other cylinder.
2. Cylinder #3 had no compression.
3. The engine has a system that shuts down 4 cylinders while cruising. This is something that needed to be removed when an aftermarket cam is used. This was not done by Horse Power Tech.
4. Due to the cylinder shutdown system, the engine needs 8 standard lifters and 8 MDS lifters. The lifters had been installed into the wrong corresponding bores. Standard lifters installed where the MDS lifters should be, and vice versa.
5. Camshaft sprocket bolts were not torque to specs.
6. The pin on the front of the camshaft was bent.
7. At least one cylinder had exhaust pushrod installed in the intake hole, and intake in the exhaust, thus bending a pushrod.
8. A passsenger side exhaust manifold bolt was missing.
9. Cylinder #8 MDS (cylinder deactivation system) solenoid was broken.
10. Cam bearings showed abnormal wear.
11. Main bearings showed excessive wear and scoring.
12. The starter bolts were stripped, and had to be retapped.
13. Grey RTV was used on intake gasket, timing cover and water pump gasket, completely unnecessary and would've likely caused more leaks.

I entrusted my car to Horse Power Tech and was totally disappointed on the poor quality work that was performed to my motor. It is upsetting to discover that someone who projects himself as a mechanic would damage my motor. Since Vector Motorsports has my car, I can relax and know that all repairs will be...

Angel and his team are extraordinary. I've trusted my girlfriend's Lancer Evolution X in their hands many times. HP Techs have always looked out for our best interest. They are very honest and perform excellent work.

I've inquired about having the AYC pump replaced in the Evo X. They could have easily taken my money and done the job, but instead, through research of their own, they found out it could be covered under Mitsubishi extended warranty. They advised I check with Mitsubishi before going further. It was covered. True honesty, and integrity.

Recently, they replaced the clutch. They respected my decision to stay with the stock flywheel. Getting into the car, they discovered the flywheel to be poorly resurfaced by the previous owner(s). HP Techs got me a great price on a ACT flywheel to match the clutch. Also, they found some issues with the drivetrain hardware. They took it upon themselves to order OEM replacements, for the best interest of the car.

Look i just dropped almost $2,000 at this place for my evo and normally someone who has spent that much in a few months would be upset but let me tell you this guys KNOW THEIR STUFF. I got my Evo tuned after doing some bolt ons and i ran into a an issue a month later which ended up being my fuel pump going out. They were able to source me a new one at a good price and got it installed and re-tuned at a discounted price. Not only that but i told them i was having an issue with my brakes and it turns out i needed a new ABS unit. If it weren’t for them i would have tried to keep bleeding them and i never would have guessed that’s what the problem was.
