Went in to exchange some Christmas gifts with a receipt. Apparently even with a receipt, comics without a price sticker are not exchangeable for another item or for in-store credit. The return policy printed on the receipt says " We will gladly exchange or give in store credit for returns. Sorry, no refunds." The posted policy on the counters adds that you have 90 days to do so. The policy doesn't state that the price sticker has to be attached to the product. The manager told me that since the $34 dollars in comic books that I had gotten as a gift did not have the price stickers on them that "I was out of luck" because the receipt did not have them itemized, it only had them listed with a generic term like back issue or old issue. After I spoke with the manager for about 10 minutes, he agreed to "purchase them back from me" for about $9 after he told me that they would be sold for about $3-$4 which was were the prices paid for them as stated on the receipt. After repeating the return policy a few more times and asking him where it stated that he then offered me about $9 and said that the return policy didn't state that he had to give the price paid as stated on the receipt for exchange because "It(the return policy) didn't say that I had to." I then asked him where it stated in the return policy that a Stocking Fee could be assessed. He paused and then said he would allow me to exchange the comic books for the price paid on the receipt in a very grumpy and sarcastic tone. He ended by saying "Don't ever try returning anything here again." As we were looking for exchange items, we could hear him and another person, who appeared to be an employee, laughing at us. I asked the man "Are you the general manager?" He replied while nodding his head "I'm the manager." The receipt he gave us for the new merchandise had everything "discounted" instead of exchanged. I suppose so his wish of 'no more exchanges'...

Read moreYeesh. I want to like this place as it supports my geekier habbits, but have found better local comic book stores that are cleaner and more aesthetically appealing. Yes, this place has greater product variety from comics to trade paperbacks to board games to tabletop miniatures. Unfortunately, it's a mixed bag with customer service. Some days the employees are overheard talking about customers that are in the store even. The manager/owner of the Ames location is a jerk who has zero customer service skills and zero management skills as he is easily overheard cussing and complaining about things like customers (who may or may not be in the store) or things like the Des Moines location. If in Des Moines, go to a female employee for help as they are better for customer assistance. The Des Moines location male employees lack social graces and are kind of scary looking. The Des Moines (male) employees and their customer service skills are generally lacking though they will do their best to help. The Ames location employees are willing to work hard to help out and do their best inspite of their jerky boss. Both locations have a general funkiness/smell to the them, and the Des Moines location's main bathroom is absolutely disgusting. The second bathroom is better, but it's quality is greatly inconsistant so make sure you've gone to the bathroom...
