I'm passionate about factory farming and animal abuse, so I was pretty offended when I noticed that this store sells a t-shirt that says "PETA: People Eating Tasty Animals". After I'd already bought an item, sadly, I asked the clerk why a counterculture shop would endorse corporate-sponsored mass torture of large living creatures. And why do so in a way that implicitly marginalizes the already small and embattled community of people who are trying to do something about a vast economic and environmental problem? He said, deadpan, "I like my steak, bro." I said, politely, "Many people do, but when there's torture involved, you might give it a second thought, y'know?" His reply: "Yeah, well, this one is a popular seller."
I don't doubt that it is, just like factory farmed meat itself, and also Trump t-shirts -- why not sell those?! -- but that doesn't make it a good, kind, compassionate thing to profit from. When I tried to return the product, he pointed me to a "No Returns" sign and then said I shouldn't let my opinions color my impression of a good product. This misses the whole point. It's not about the product; it's about the relationship that customers form with the business owners in their community, and how welcome they feel at those establishments.
I know that I'm only talking to a few of you out there, and that many more of you will think I'm just some uppity nutcase. That's fine; think what you will. I'm not here to debate that -- not that I'd change anyone's mind anyhow. I'm writing this because I think that the smoker community has a large proportion of veg-friendly, compassionate, woke people, and I hereby invite all of them to skip this place when doing your smoke shopping -- at the very least until the owner decides to stop selling torture propaganda and justifying it by appeal to his own personal pleasures and profits. There are lots of other smoke shops around here, all with a better selection of supplies and (probably) owned by nicer people.
Let me note, in fairness, that other people who work in this shop have been really kind to me in the past, and some of the art they sell at this store is dope. It's mainly what has kept me stopping in every month or so for the past 6 years. I'm sad/annoyed that I have to stop going to the closest smoke shop to my home, because the owner likes to sell hate speech. Wish...
Read moreLet me start by saying this place goes beyond your normal head shop! I have been going here for almost a year now and the service alone tops any other shop, not the mention to selection and prices! Jacob is always the associate I interact with and he's extremely knowledgeable of his merchandise and if what I'm looking for is unavailable, he's eager to order it or refer me to where I can find it. I go here for Kratom capsules and on many occasions he has offered to order specific brands on my behalf! This shop feels quaint and family oriented! You won't regret...
Read moreWas running behind after long day. Arrived at state rd store @ 8pm and the closed sign was showing. Really needed some products . Popped my head in door and Jace from sales staff was kind enough to let me come in and get what I needed. Really appreciate Jace going the extra mile for me. Yes they have good products and the other attributes of a good business. Without employees like Jace Heads Up would be just another smoking product vendor. Thanks to Jace and the staff at Heads Up this area has a great place to shop for our smoking accessories.and...
