The Skidompha Secondhand Book Shop in downtown Damariscotta is a cozy treasure trove for readers. Tucked along Elm Street, it’s the kind of place where shelves are stacked high with donated books, puzzles, and games, all waiting for a new home. Every purchase helps support the town library, making it a true community hub. Inside, the shop feels like a series of book-filled rooms, each corner devoted to a different genre. From children’s classics to cookbooks and local histories, the selection is always changing, which makes browsing part of the fun. Prices are affordable, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming thanks to the volunteers who keep it running. What began decades ago as a small fundraiser has grown into one of New England’s most beloved used bookshops. Overlooking the Damariscotta River, it’s a spot where travelers and locals alike can slow down, hunt for hidden gems, and carry a bit of Maine’s literary spirit home with them. #SkidomphaBooks #Damariscotta #UsedBookShop #MaineCoast #NewEnglandTravel

Such a great affordable bookstore well worth the trip I bought quite a few books for $30! It's very cute they have lots of interesting nooks & crannies including a bird watching corner. It's not geared toward tourists so the prices aren't crazy & it has a lovely local feel to it which is sometimes hard to find in a town like Damariscotta which attracts so many tourists in the summer.

What a treasure! This store is tucked behind the main street with good parking. It is the best used bookstore I have been to in ages. We bought many books that were priced in the $2 to $6 range and a huge depth in many categories. Spacious and lots of chairs for slow shopping. Absolutely dreamy.

This was my favourite stop on our trip. What a great find. Not only is there a wide range of books, CDs, DVDs, vinyl records, etc for sale, they even carved out little reading areas, just like a small library. One of these little nooks had binoculars so visitors can take their time and look at the water and surrounding areas. Another nook had a drawing easel right by the window facing the water. What great ideas to keep people engaged during their visit. All proceeds go to supporting the local library. The people were super...
