Otterbein review *My elderly mother had an injury resulting in needing skilled rehab care. Being that she lived in Lakeside/Marblehead We started out at Otterbein’s Jane Baker House. It’s important to mention that insurance is the dictator of all things and that determines what care you receive no matter if it is enough or not. At Jane Baker house, the staff is agreeable for the most part. However you’ll notice that some are better than others. With only 1-2 aides total at any given time (this is true of most all nursing homes and rehabs I’ve found), the care is not enough or in a timely fashion. This is an issue in general at all places. The nurses, Sabrina and Christina, are helpful and do their job. After my moms insurance decided skilled rehab was no longer needed (it was still very needed) and my mom couldn’t physically go home, we had to pay for respite care (less help and a literal fortune) in otterbeins assisted living. Keep in mind that the staff we had to deal with are the same at both places. Their social worker, Stacy McMurray, seems nice and on top of things at first. But the moment you need her to reply or answer a call, she is horrible at communication to the point where you cannot help but think it’s pure laziness or intentional. And she only seems to reply if you copy her superiors in on all communication. She is not fit for the job. Moving on to Phyllis Gysan, the head of nursing. Same issues with communication. Extremely hit or miss. Unprofessional and horrible bedside manner. Copying Jennifer Lenthe, the executive director, helps for getting replies from the other staff, but don’t expect her to communicate at all. Until you mention a lawyer. That’s when they decide to communicate. The people who you have to entrust with your elderly loved one is in the hands of people who are not capable of doing their jobs in a professional, caring or prompt fashion. If you need to schedule transportation for your loved one through otterbein, they cannot seem to get that right. Every time my mom had an appointment to be taken to, they messed up times and dates with out fail. I was hours away and couldn’t do anything when this happened. Essentially, I had to do so much follow up and checking in and rescheduling (due to their mess ups) to make sure things were being handled, that I shouldve been getting paid. You also will receive the most communication when your elderly loved one has an accident such as a fall. Of course due to Otterbein not wanting to be sued. This has happened not only with my mother but my uncle as well. Unfortunately, Otterbein is the only option for some people in the area. I would not recommend sending your loved one here. My mom is now moved into an assisted living near me. I will say that it is night and day as far as the care, attention to detail and communication. Steve, an aide at the assisted living, is the absolute best employee...
Read moreI can't say enough good things about Otterbein Marblehead. The community offers a wide range of living options, from Independent Living to rehabilitation services, all situated on a beautiful, well-maintained campus. The grounds are lovely, with plenty of walking paths, gardens, and peaceful outdoor spaces that really create a sense of home.
What stands out most to me is the caring and attentive staff. Everyone—whether in maintenance, dining, or nursing—goes above and beyond to make residents feel comfortable and valued. The team is incredibly friendly, always willing to offer assistance, and it’s clear they genuinely care about the well-being of the residents. My mother has also spent time in the rehab facility here, and I was so impressed with how different the experience was from a traditional hospital. The rehab center has a warm, house-like feel that focuses on personalized care rather than the sterile, clinical environment often found in hospitals. The staff is very attentive, and they made sure my mom had everything she needed to feel comfortable during her stay.
The cleanliness throughout the community is top-notch. The common areas are spotless, and the living spaces are always well-maintained. It’s clear that the staff takes pride in keeping everything clean and inviting.
There are also plenty of activities to keep residents engaged. From cards and games to fitness classes and social events, there’s something for everyone. My mother enjoys the variety of activities available, and it’s great to see her excited about staying active and connected with others.
Overall, I couldn’t be more pleased with the care my mother has received at Otterbein Marblehead. The combination of a beautiful campus, a caring and attentive staff, and a wide range of living options makes it a fantastic choice for senior living. It really does feel like a community, and I’m so grateful to know my mom is in...
Read moreMy 96-year-old mom moved into Otterbein-Marblehead assisted living about two months ago after a stint in rehab following a fall that broke her shoulder. She had previously been in Portland Place in Sandusky which was marvelous, but after her last fall was no longer viable for various reasons.
What can I say other than I’m confident my mom is safe, well cared for, and as happy as a dementia patient can be. That’s honestly all I need, but with Otterbein there is much more!
The staff is very responsive to all concerns from the family. I’ve witnessed them interacting with my mom, and they are so much more than kind to her.
Otterbein is clean and well cared for too. It’s a pleasant place to hang out with my mom. That’s important to me, because I feel good about it, and that translates to me feeling confident about how they treat my mom when I’m not around.
The food from chef Frank is over the top. His care and concerns go far beyond just providing great food. He also looks for food styles that are easy to eat for residents who have difficulty cutting or eating. He also firmly believes that everyone should have choices in their lives and that includes options at mealtime.
Add to everything else that Otterbein accepts Medicaid when and if that becomes necessary, and it’s just perfect.
As my mom said today, “This is a nice place. It’s a nice room, a nice bed…and nice people!”
I couldn’t...
