Disgusting store. They allow flies to infest the hot bar and cafe areas of the deli. They talk about customers like the customers can't hear them behind the counters. Sanitation practices are disgusting with a chef who won't wear gloves and just sets food out in the open for the aforementioned flies to swarm in the time it takes for hot bar workers to notice the food and put it away. Polices change on a dime and you're just expected to know. They don't post any notices about changes to the hot bar menu and don't tell customers that items they may like won't be served anymore. They also don't have any form of allergen warnings on their hot bar menu. Ask a worker behind the counter if an item has an allergen and there's a solid chance they will have to run to the back and ask because even THEY don't know what's in the food they serve, or they will tell you it is allergen free when that isn't possible and is easy to recognize isn't possible by watching them make food. The entire space is a cross contamination zone. If you have ciliac disease don't eat here. If you have a dairy allergy dont get smoothies from here. If you have a nut allergy avoid everything from the deli. You'll be lucky if they are even considerate to change gloves between someone else's...
Read moreI appreciate that this store exists, their Thursday dinners are excellent, and they offer a wide range of high quality food products. I wish they did a better job of sourcing produce from small local farms. Their use of the term "local" is a bit rich. Also, I can't count the number of times I have been overcharged for items. Beware: sometimes the sale prices listed around the store are not recorded at the cash register. And few of the cashiers seem to understand how to subtract the weight of a peanut butter jar from the total (for bulk peanut butter). Might seem like a small gripe, but it costs me $1.85 every time and I eat a lot of peanut butter. The cashier today gave me a ton of attitude for asking her to add the jar and then entered it wrong anyway and overcharged me. Please train your cashiers properly and while you're at it try paying all your workers a...

Today was my first time visiting Durham Co-op Market, and I was excited to check it out. The store was supposed to open at 7 a.m., and I arrived around 7:05 a.m. I stood at the door for about a minute, and while several employees made eye contact with me, no one came to the door or acknowledged me. Feeling confused, I walked away, only to see another couple approach the door shortly after. That’s when someone finally came out and informed them that inventory was being done and that they weren't sure when the store would open. They also apologized for not having a sign out to communicate the delay.
This lack of communication and service was disappointing and has unfortunately made the decision for me that I won't be returning to Durham...
