The Can Opener Bridge of Durham — Local services in Durham

This place is Absolutely legendary! I have actually seen it in person several times but haven’t personally witnessed any of the many Accidents this bridge has caused outside of YouTube videos. For those who don’t know, Basically the bridge is Juuuuust too short for trucks to go under it. However it’s Not in a way that is initially noticeable by truck drivers who frequently, ignoring all signs, safety measures and common sense, throw caution to the wind and think “I can make it!” Leading the bridge to, as the name suggests, Shear the roof off of the truck like a Can Opener! It happens so often that there’s a camera set up across the street that records the bridge and uploads the wreck footage online. It’s a hilarious case of “Play Stupid Games, win stupid Prizes”. They even tried raising the bridge as much as they feasibly could and putting up all sorts of signs and stuff and None of that stopped it. The thing is like a Magnet for foolish truck drivers whose arrogance or Ignorance only serves to sacrifice their trucks to feed the beast. Definitely worth seeing in person but probably safer...

At last count, the score is Can Opener: 195; Trucks: zero. The biggest hapless contender was 50 feet of semi-truck, which responded to the height-triggered yellow light as many would, by trying to make the light. It got almost all of the way through, at the cost of its entire roof and snapping the trailer in half. There seems to be no end of drivers who dare the dash of crash, so keep an eye to the ground for ornate and grotesque truck crumbs. Update!! We came here last night and it’s still perfect for a family or friends outing. They have heaters set up outside and have enclosed the eating area in heavy plastic. You can also eat inside. We stopped inside to get hot chocolate and the staff was very friendly. They also have lovely Christmas decorations! This has become one of our favorite outings. They have coffee, local beer wine, so many choices but more than anything the food trucks. There’s something for everyone and the atmosphere is a whole vibe!
