Country Stitches — Local services in East Lansing

This store has a lot of unique fabric. I like to go there when I have a special project. But when I go, the staff isn't always helpful or friendly. This visit was a Saturday of Labor Day weekend. They closed at 5pm. I was aware of that before we went. At 4:45 they announced they were going to be closing soon. My husband got in line while I tried to find some laminate material for inside a diaper bag. I interrupted a cutting order to ask only because I knew they wanted to leave and I apologized when I did. The staff member was rude. Then at check out, the fabric I bought rang up wrong. When told the total, my husband mentioned that seemed high. The staff member who rang it up (different than rude cutter), said it was the fleece which was expensive. The total was over $200. We paid. Then my husband looked at the receipt. The fleece rang up at over $40 per yard! It didn't upset me that it rang up wrong but that they were in such a hurry to close she didn't even care to check before we cashed out. She wasted more time trying to refund us than if she just would have made sure all was good when we said it seemed high. I wonder how many people paid that price?! Supposed to be $16 a yard. What really got me was staff hollering to lock the doors. Another shopper said you should make an announcement for the shoppers looking at fabric on their sidewalk sale. The staff member just said they can come back tomorrow. Wow. Nice. I have had experiences at this store when I was happy with the customer service. But also several that I wasn't. I choose to shop local for many reasons. But online is looking like a better option and better price. It's all about customer...

Was delighted to discover this shop when my brand new sewing machine (bought elsewhere unfortunately) broke and needed repair. When I brought it in they took time right then to check it over enough to ensure it wasn't just some simple user error issue which as a new sewer I appreciated greatly. It did need repair and they fixed it in less than a week and charged a reasonable fee. My next sewing machine will be purchased from this store for sure. Much greater selection of machines than where I bought from. Best array of fabrics and sewing related doo-dads I have ever seen. They are very serious about pandemic safety with plastic sheeting protecting staff and enforcing mask requirements. I so appreciate that. I and another in my household are at high risk for COVID complications and this is one of few stores that feels safe to shop in these days due to their diligence in enforcing protective measures. If I was reviewing the sewing machine staff, the rating would be a 10-they are so helpful and attentive. I have bought several machines and accessories from them. My rating is because of the quilt shop staff. When we entered the store, there were two workers, neither greeted us. The only time the one acknowledged me is when I walked up to the counter to ask for help and she said are you ready to check out. No I need help finding something. When the owner came around, they both became super friendly with her but still no assist with me the customer. Ultimately one of the sewing machine staff helped me find what I was looking for. The picture I have attached is how my fabric was cut despite me gently asking if we were lined up for proper measurement. I have spent hours and significant money here wanting to support local.
