I brought my peridot gemstone to this jeweler to have it set in a ring. The gemstone was valuable, both monetarily and sentimentally, as I bought it on a trip last year. My stone was bought from a certified gemstone jeweler in Tanzania. The jeweler had boasted about their nearly 40-year experience so I hoped I can trust them with setting my gemstone. While they worked with me initially to find the right setting and the ring turned out well, they had damaged my gemstone. The gemstone now has a pretty prominent inclusion that impacted the clarity. I had asked them about it, and they denied that it was damaged at first, stating that it was due to a shadow or perhaps it was the glue they had used. I was patient and had them remove it from the ring to ensure that it was not due to the placement in the ring. Upon inspection, it was clear that the gemstone is damaged. They were not forthcoming with me until I had a lengthy and laborious exchange with the owner. Finally, after filing complaint at the Better Business Bureau and leaving a negative review of their business, they were willing to admit that they had damaged my gemstone.
I would have appreciated it if they would have been upfront with me about damaging my stone rather than assuming I didn't know my stone, or I was imagining the prominent inclusion or that I was "blowing it out of proportion." After their admission, I requested the money I paid for the gold and their services and compensation for the stone that they had damaged. They were willing to pay me back the money I paid for the ring but stated that my gemstone was worth $50 dollars and that's what they would pay me. My stone was several hundreds of dollars more valuable. In fact, the owner told me that my ring was worth about $1200 when he completed it. It was really heartbreaking that they had damaged my property due to their incompetence and worse, they lacked the customer service to own up to it and fix it. It was even more insulting that they think they are the ones that should appraise the gemstone and decide how much to pay me EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE THE ONES THAT DAMAGED IT. I recognized that this issue would not be resolved by the business owner. They offered me the opportunity to select two gemstones in exchange for the damage they caused. The gemstones that I was given are cheaper ones and are more likely to amount to the $50 dollars that they had initially offered me. I recognized that the owner was not willing to pay me back and wanted to reach a resolution to effectively end my interactions with them.
Ethical business practices would dictate that I be compensated for the damage of my stone and that is something that I was not granted here. I'm sharing this in hopes that customers make informed decisions about...
