57th Street Bookcase & Cabinet — Local services in Evanston Township

We are very pleased with the work 57th Street Bookcase did for us. Sam was very responsive from the first email and he had our built-ins designed, modeled, and quoted within a week of meeting with us...not an easy task considering the detail, scale, and that we tasked him with making them look like they had been there from the beginning. The work Sam and his team did was incredible. His design incorporated everything we asked for, yet he was also flexible and accommodating when we had to make changes on the fly. Both Sam and his install team came back on several occasions to ensure everything was perfect and to our satisfaction. Would definitely recommend 57th Street Bookcase and would hire them again in a heartbeat.

And hey, if I'm being honest, the only minor critique I can offer is that the lead time from design approval to install is fairly lengthy (12-16 weeks), but I guess this is what happens when a pandemic shuts down the world and people decide to spruce up their homes...just about every skilled craftsman/woman is in high demand, so plan...

We have purchased solid cherry bookcases and end tables from 57th St. periodically the last 10 years. Quality, sturdy and good-looking pieces. We had a cat that would constantly jump up on the kitchen counters the last 8 years. Because he refused to let me clip his claws, the damage he caused to the drawer fronts and doors beneath the sink were sickeningly unsightly. They are solid cherry wood. The cabinetry is not from 57th. On a whim, I got in contact with 57th St. and asked them if they'd be willing to refinish the drawer fronts/doors if I brought them in. I emailed photos first. They took the job. It took them about 2½ weeks to complete the job. When I went to pick them up, I could NOT believe what a beautiful job they did restoring those pieces. Despite great reviews and a compelling instagram page, the company is unresponsive. I engaged and received a quick response to send over details of my project 2 months ago. I sent a detailed write up with pictures and a general vision of what we are looking for. Again, a quick response that they appreciated the thorough overview and they’d get back to me in a week or so. That’s totally fair.

It’s been two months and I’ve followed up several times. They apologized and stated they will get back to me. Empty promise.

Either they are very selective of their projects and my $10k-$20k custom renovation of our master bedroom with attached sitting room isn’t large enough, or they are a defunct company.

If you’re too busy or not interested in the work, just say so. Either way, waste of time and terrible...
