Update: I'm sorry to give a bad review. I don't very often, but my most recent visit here will be my last. They were busy on a Saturday evening and I got there at 7 and ordered in-store. I wish they'd given some indication -- any indication -- that my order would take time. I had my two kids with me and I bought them pretzel snacks while we waited, but after 30 minutes I asked if my food would be ready soon. They told me the curry rice was taking time. Finally after 45 minutes I told them it was really taking too long, and they scrambled to get my food together and handed me everything. I only had a California roll, Hokkaido roll and the curry rice. The curry rice is apparently what took time, but they had it posted by the register so I thought it being promoted. In Japan, curry rice is considered "fast food", so the fact they it took over 45 minutes was unbelievable to me. What was worse though was that they could see I was there with my two young children waiting and they gave no indication from the get-go that it would take much time, nor did they say anything to me until I went up to them exasperated. I left Sea Ranch saying "Never Again!" and my kids looked miserable. That should NOT be anyone's experience going out to eat.

[Previous review] I enjoyed the experience getting lunch here the other day with other Japanese-speaking colleagues. One of us being Japanese and others being Caucasian, the woman at the cash register casually replied to us in Japanese regardless if we spoke to her in Japanese. They had a low-carb sushi roll selection that had less rice and konyaku added, with a bit more fish too. There's free, self-serve hot barley tea when you dine in, which is a nice touch. I didn't look at all the grocery items on offer, but it's nice that they have a few shelves of what looks like a well-curated selection including snacks, sweets, noodles and even bags of rice. The sushi rolls I chose, mostly tuna and salmon, I think it was, tasted fresh, and portions were fair. Overall, Sea Ranch is a great spot to frequent if you're...

Tucked away near the purple line stop of Dempster is a small unassuming shop/restaurant that serves pretty good sushi at a decent price. They have a 25$ all you can eat special but keep in mind, you will have to pay for anything that is not eaten as the disclaimer points out when you order.

Personally, I am not a fan of hot sushi items, I find it strange and well, not sushi like at all. Their maki rolls are on the smaller side for their non speciality items but the rice is seasoned well, the fish lacks that "sitting around in a warm room" taste and the price for these items won't cost you an arm or a leg.

The tonkotsu (pork bone) ramen is actually really quite good! First time I have had Japanese ramen that was not merely a layer of oil and fat in miso broth. The broth had a wonderful rich pork flavor and leaves you satisfied on cold nights.

Is it your typical chain sushi place that serves deep fried rolls? No. Honestly that is just how I like it too.

The good: the non specialty rolls, the ramen The not so good: rolls are on the smaller side so you may need to get all you can eat if you also work as a food disposal unit on as a...

I visited Sea Ranch for the first time. I am really amazed at their food as well as their service. I ordered a bowl of Beef Udon soup, a scallop roll, and their famous sushi. The prices are fair, and the ingredients are quality, also the service is awesome. All of their staff here is helpful and friendly. You will absolutely enjoy the place and the ambiance inside. They have so many food displays for all the customers to easily pick and order. They have drinks, desserts, appetizers, and others. Such a place full of affordable and awesome foods. Their sushi is very consistent and tastier than the sushi of other places I have been visited before. All of their selection for sushi is mouth-watering, so delicious, and plated so well. You will absolutely love each of every sushi flavor they have. You can also buy anything here in such a fair price. No wonder why a lot of people keep coming back here and really keep loving this place. Sea Ranch is the fun shop to go for some Japanese groceries and stuff. This place is waiting for you! Highly recommend! Will visit here again soon once I came back at Evanston. 5-star...

A cute little shop located in the heart of Evanston, a few blocks away from Northwestern. It's half restaurant and half market. The store itself is small so selection from the market is limited and more expensive than you would normally find at an ethnic grocery store. But this is Evanston so what do you expect? The sushi is here is acceptable. Surprisingly good for such a small establishment, but falls FAR short of a dedicated Japanese restaurant. The food here is relatively inexpensive, but probably for a reason. My Tonkotsu Ramen broth was very light in taste/richness (to the point where I could barely taste any pork), and it didn't even come with any meat or a marinated egg. The noodles were not bad - slightly springy and thick, but this type of noodle would work better with a thicker, richer broth. I'm not joking when I say that the instant ramen that I ate in Japan is better than what I got here. The udon was soggy/mushy and the soup base was one-dimensional and too sweet.
