My husband and I decided to stop by Howard Hill Furniture on New Year’s Day of this year to look for furniture for our new home. The number one reason we decided to stop at Howard Hill? We read phenomenal reviews of the company online.
We arrived at the store and were so excited by the no-hassle sales process, the pieces available to us, and the ability to bring home an unfinished piece of furniture and make it ours. Ultimately we selected two pieces- a buffet for our kitchen and a changing table for our little ones, who at the time we were expecting in late February/early March.
When we completed our sale, we discussed with our Salesman having Howard Hill finish the piece versus us doing it ourselves and what sort of timeline we should expect to receive our pieces in. We stressed how important timing was to us prior to making our purchase, after all, we were expecting twins and they are known to come early. At that time, he stated 2-3 weeks and that he could probably swing two weeks. We were ecstatic- in fact, friend’s of ours knew we had stopped in on our way home and when we spoke with them later, we raved about the entire experience at Howard Hill.
Three weeks then passed- on that Wednesday (January 21), we called to check in as we hadn’t received a call about our delivery. At this time we learned that our pieces were delayed with the manufacturer- they weren’t expected for another 2-3 weeks. We were, needless to say, disappointed. Not only was this well beyond the delivery threshold we had discussed, but also this would leave us little to no time to finish the piece before our children’s anticipated arrival and we had to call in to find this out- this had not been communicated to us.
On February 10, our twins were born, but they still did not have a changing table in their room. Just after their birth, we found out the table was in. We explained to them the situation- and they told us to come on out and select a stain. On Sunday, February 15 we made the drive out to New Jersey (when we could have been visiting our children in the NICU) and selected a stain. At this time, the only discussion was timeline- no costs were disclosed and we did not believe any costs would be disclosed since Howard Hill left us with the impression that they would be working with us due to the delays beyond the promised delivery dates. We were told they had to send the piece out for completion and it would be another 2-3 weeks, but they would try to get it back sooner since the kids had arrived.
Fast forward to March 5-- As it had been 2.5 weeks since we had selected our stain in store, and we were given a timeline of 2-3 weeks, I called to check in. After locating our order, I was shocked to find out it was completed on Wednesday, yet again, no one had called. If we hadn’t called in, when would we have been notified our pieces were complete and ready for delivery? Luckily for us, we did call in and a delivery was going out to PA today. The men who delivered our furniture were great- until it came time for us to sign off on the work. At this time, and for the first time, we were notified of a balance being due for the staining. We were in shock. Given that we were told that Howard Hill would work with us, no costs were discussed at any time, and the fact that the pieces were 6 weeks overdue based on the timeline Howard Hill promised us at purchase, we were certainly not expecting to pay an additional $200++ dollars for the work to be completed.
My husband called in to the store to discuss this issue and we both feel we got no where in doing so. In fact, we felt strong armed. What choice did we really have at this time, but to pay? Our children are almost a month old, the piece was already in their bedroom, and we did not have a back up in mind as we had patiently continued to work with Howard Hill. We begrudgingly made...

Read moreI've been buying at Howard Hill for over 30 years. They have anything you want from traditional pieces to really unique. My first purchase was a bedroom set for my daughter who is now almost 40! I've bought a kitchen set which outlasted the marriage :-) and am now waiting for my dining room set to be delivered this week. Last Christmas I bought a play table for my grandson that is holding up remarkably well (he's 6) and looks as good as the day it arrived. I've painted some of these items, stained some myself, but lately have been having Howard Hill finish them for me. The craftsmanship is amazing. The pieces survive the toughest use and you won't find anything laminated! Solid wood all the way! The salesmen (I'm told) don't work on commission, so they are never pushy and won't follow you around the store like furniture stores do. I can't say enough good about this store. No wonder it's been in business for so many years. I hope they don't ever...
