This past weekend, I went to Soulex for the first time. It was -- well, if I say something about myself first, what I have to say about floating there will make more sense.
My timing this weekend was such that I didn't get to see the other people floating come or go, so I don't know what kind of crowd goes there. But I heard about floating years ago because of Joe Rogan's "evangelism." Great for the health, relaxing, and -- most intriguing to me at the time -- there was the potential to access "different states of consciousness." For years and years, I really, really wanted to be able to meditate and experience that sort of thing; I didn't seem to be able to, so I thought floating would be the perfect shortcut.
Soulex opened right before I left the DC area, so I missed out; but I left to live somewhere that would make a daily Qigong and meditation practice more possible for me. So, for a couple years, I've been doing Qigong every day.
I just came back to the DC area for a couple of weeks and then I remembered -- Soulex!
It's funny, since I've been doing my practice, my perspective has shifted. I feel quieter and more peaceful inside. But when I started feeling that, and when I began to feel simple joy every day -- I thought, "Man, who cares about other states of consciousness? This is what I was really missing!" Being happy is enough.
All that is to say...
I figured -- "Now that I know what it feels like to relax and meditate, I wonder what floating will be like?" That's why I wanted to float this time.
Long story short -- it took me right to the sense of deep relaxation I get from Qigong! It took a while to get over the fact that I was floating in saltwater, but once I got over that, I just let go. When I thought I was relaxed, I said, "Let me just let go even more and just totally give in to the water. I'll let it carry me." I felt the last little bit of tension release. I could scan my whole body in the dark and silence and feel there was absolutely no tension. Slowly, slowly -- I stopped feeling the water, the air, my body, and everything. I lost track of time. It was the most perfect place to be -- no clothes, no outside world, no duties or concerns or anything -- just lost in the silence, alone and content in aloneness.
When the session ended, I had this feeling of inexplicable joy and love come over me. When I came back out, the owner and the other person working there were so kind and warm asking me about my experience -- I felt their love. Colors were so bright, time was so slow, and I felt like -- I felt myself so OPEN, head to toe.
What I'm saying is, floating is the real deal! It can be just as relaxing and healing as a good Qigong or meditation session.
The place itself? Clean, bright, warm, comfortable. The owner is really nice -- it feels like visiting someone's home, not a business. I'm glad I got to try it, and it confirms for me -- this is a good way to cultivate inner quiet...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMy daughter and I went on Sunday October 6, her Bday was on Monday Oct 7, I couldnāt go on my Bday I was sick, so she waited until I felt better and made it a day for us mom and daughter day. The Spa, was so clean we got there early so excited. Once we got in the staff showed us around the place. The woman was so kind sorry I canāt remember her name but she was so kind. Went into Spa area so we can prepare ourself change into our swim wear.
Donāt get me wrong I was scared at first until I seen my daughter floating in the tub was so big for both of us. When I got in I started to pray cuz I canāt swim and trust me they have you sign disclosure agreement. My daughter and I was floating the light didnāt turnoff yet until the tub is full and once that happened the lights tone down and then it got dark 2 dark for me. So I did hit the button to get help with beautiful lights was turned on changed 2 different colors.
It was so peaceful and relaxing as we float went to sleep and woke up after our 1 hour it was longer then 1hr though. Got out and shower due to the Epsom Salt we did float in it which made my skin on my foot so clean all the dry skin gone. Salt was all over my daughter face and we laughed so hard I didnāt have any on my face did use coconut oil.
Which they provide you with Vaseline for hour face. Just talking about our experience with the Float Spa As we headed 2 the dressing area where you can sit down and fix yourself right up nice room so we had to blow dry our hair after I got my hair done that Friday. My hair was a mess after all the floating we did. I Did have on swim cap but it didnāt matter was it worth it hell yes. You put ear wax in your ears to protect your ears. Epsom Salt, got into my eyes due to the fact it was worth it and my eyes was ok after all.
Soulex, will definitely see us again real soon.
I was so patient at my dentist appt on Monday not scared like I was last Thursday. This float spa, had a lot to do with me Relax, Relate, Release.

Ā Ā Ā Read moreIāve been floating at Soulex almost every Sunday for the past 3+ years. Through this time Iāve watched Pedramin (owner) grow the business with the same enthusiasm, upbeat positivity, attention to detail, high end customer service that I experienced from day one.
The Environment:: The spa itself is a serene aesthetically pleasing environment. Minimalistic yet contemporary design that can be appreciated by the design forward or more simplistic customer. Thereās a silence that permeates through the space even with the relaxing background music that plays lightly in the background.
The Service:: Excellent customer service and attention to detail. Ive witnessed multiple orientations for newcomers who arrive around the same time as me. Itās warm, itās welcoming, and itās thorough. Youāll always be asked whether you want water or tea before and after your float. Thatās like the Soulex way of saying Hello. There are cubbyās for your shoes, and slippers for you to slip in to for walking around the spa.
The Experience:: The float pods are cool looking spaceship pods. Thereās also a float room with a pool big enough for couples to float together or customers who prefer the open basin style. Iām a 5ā10.5 male and Iām able to float comfortably without the touching the edges of the tank. There are all the standard and premium spa amenities (bath robes, hair dryer, ear plugs etc). The ginger chew and water on the towel ledge, at the end of the float are a nice touch while you wash all the salt off.
The Extras:: The Soulex candles are a hit!
Lastly, floating is one of those things you do where the benefit compounds. Donāt be dismayed if the first time you feel like you couldnāt relax or get into it. The truth is most of us donāt. Took me like 4 times to begin relaxing during my floats. Once you learn how to get out of your own way, that skill will seep into other areas...
