Update: If it weren’t for the amazing surgeons I see and love, I would never step foot in this hospital again. I’m having another procedure next week and I’m terrified that I’ll have the same PACU nurses - far more afraid of them than the actual surgery. I don’t trust them to take care of me or my health. I shouldn’t have to worry that while I’m in my most vulnerable state, the people who are supposed to be taking care of me will instead hurt me, pull and grab me without my consent, neglect my privacy, ignore my concerns, treat me differently because of my medical history, and leave me feeling traumatized by the interaction.
UCONN’s response to my complaint of the below events was, in summary, “sorry you feel that way, but no harm was done.”
Original: This review is only for the two female nurses in the post-anesthesia recovery room after my surgery 7/27/23 in the evening. Everyone else - my doctors, their teams, even the receptionist of the building - was incredible. The nasty, unprofessional “nurses” (they don’t deserve that title) wanted me to leave “before I started screaming in pain again.” I wasn’t asking for meds at that point, but I had asked my doctor specifically if I would be rushed home, and she said never. Because if I’m going to scream somewhere, where better than the hospital if my pain gets out of control after a major surgery? This was my first moment conscious again after the procedure, besides the times waking up screaming that I thankfully was not conscious for, and these two nurses yanked me out of bed like a rag doll - I don’t say that lightly either, my arm still hurts at the elbow joint from them pulling - because they decided I needed to pee so they could send me home. I literally begged them to leave me alone and stop touching me, because they were hurting me. They sat me on the toilet and with the door and curtain to the hallway open, stood over me to watch so I wouldn’t fall, and I asked if I could have some privacy - my fiancé was in the room and could have helped/watched me. Finally they backed up a bit rather than standing and staring asking “did you go yet??” and I asked my fiancé to hand me my purse. One nurse said “There better not be any drugs in there!!!” My medical history includes a PAST drug addiction - and clearly they don’t ask that of every patient, but UCONN says it’s not discrimination. Right. I responded that I was retrieving my phone so that I could update my family and have something to focus on and relax. I still couldn’t pee, because of the pain and meds, and when they brought me out of the bathroom they had TAKEN THE BED. They put some hard blue chair there so I would be forced to sit up and not fall asleep - their words. I had just gotten my uterus/tubes/cervix and tons of endo scraped out, it hurt to sit up! I asked “why are you doing this?” and again mentioned that the doctor said I would not be rushed out. They repeated about getting me home “before I start screaming again.” At this point, I asked to be catheterized because my bladder felt full to burst, which added to the pain. They said no, they would give me two hours to pee on my own before they’ll catheterize me. Then suddenly they left without a word, and we didn’t realize until we noticed the change of shift that they were gone for the night! No goodbye, and more than that - why were you so concerned with rushing me to pee and go home if you were about to leave?? My fiancé asked the male nurse to please help me, my bladder was clearly hurting everything more. Thankfully that sweet angel of a man agreed. He removed 600ml of urine from me. A quick google search will show you that the average woman’s max capacity is 500ml. So, my bladder literally WAS full to burst, and they wanted to wait two more hours. I have never felt so disrespected by anyone in a medical profession. From the other negative reviews, clearly there are huge problems - yet nothing is being done. Why are you allowing patients to be treated this way with no...
Read moreJust got out of surgery after being LIED TO by 5 different doctors. Rare genetic condition that doesn't respond to many pain meds. Told them a specific med I can't take, 5 people assured me they'd listen and care then I woke up in worst pain of my life and a prescription for THE WRONG MED. had to waste whole day there after they called me in 7:30am and scheduled for 12:00 then sitting waiting to get gauze changed and IV out for over an hour when I've already been a day without food thanks to them telling me wrong surgery time. they also committed MALPRACTICE not telling myself or my caregiver any post op care following surgery. They had me sign a paper saying they told me everything 5 minutes after being awake from anesthesia and purposefully waiting to keep out caregivers and not tell them. I told them I can't take oxy, they said don't worry we will prescribe something else LIES AGAIN. Had to wait 6 hours for the doctor to correct that cause she apparently left right after and didn't bother with proper meds or aftercare. The nurses were clearly med students that should be back in school cause they left BLOOD BLISTERS on my arm from misplaced BP cuff (I used to be an EMT, that's EASY). They acknowledged my genetic condition yet still messed up my neck in surgery. I asked for a work note multiple times and was assured I'd get one LIES. They basically smiled at me and confirmed they heard everything then half assed my care and completely destroyed my trust in the medical system. They had me bleeding out and refused to change gauze, coming in later to THROW IT ON MY BODY AND MAKE MY GIRLFRIEND DO IT. I was happy pre surgery and they assured I was in good hands and it felt like I woke up in a third world medical facility with 0 care or time. Since I have no after care and they screwed my neck up they better hope I don't get a complications because I'm already getting an attorney, the DA and going after this so called "hospital" worst hospital experience in my life and I've gone to Windham hospital. I better get apologies and an explanation or I'll be going for millions in malpractice Update: they are SO grimy and guilty. The man on the phone tried to tell me an ex healthcare professional that nothing I signed was not a legal document?? Yeah I'm not a moron like the Drs that work there I know what a legal document and malpractice is. This hospital is screwed when I...
Read moreWe just spent 4 days at John Dempsey for a kidney removal surgery and recovery. Almost every single person we came in contact with was fantastic. We saw A LOT of people. Only 2 were somewhat unpleasant. No need to complain about them, so moving on. My husband was treated fantastic throughout all the stages of this surgery. My daughter and I waited in the waiting room. They had a screen for us to watch and see the progress of his surgery and where he was. That helped us during our long wait. As soon as he was done and able to, his Urologist came out and took us in a room to let us know everything went well. When I went to see him in recovery, the nurses and staff were very kind. They treated him well, as they did all the other patients I was in hearing distance from. When we went up to his room, we were very happy to find that they were a single patient room hospital. It was a large and comfortable room for all of us to relax. The nurses he had were wonderful. They had the best bedside manner. Joking, conversational, and attentive. My husband is very social, and he likes to talk. He is very relaxed, and didn't ask for much. But they were so helpful. Because of the care he received, and the attention, he was able to flow through the "milestones" to be released a bit earlier than usual. We were happy to take him home, but missed all the wonderful people he got to know over those few days. They made this painful and scary situation so much better with their care. We don't have a negative thing to say about our experience, even with the 2 people who weren't pleasant (luckily, our time with them was short). Well, I guess if I had to say something negative, it would be the patient food. Haha! It really was bad. Not the fault of the care team. Just the way it is. Never had good food at any hospital as a patient. But, if you have to go to this hospital, the cafeteria food court is fantastic. They have a sushi section, and they make it fresh. It was delicious. But we want to thank everyone who took care of my husband during his time here. Thank...
