I dealt with Garrett, who is a nice guy, but that is as far as I'll go. My wife and I rented 2 bikes from Ocean Cycles, 1 of which was equipped with a child seat for my 2 year old daughter. All was going well for the first day of our rental, the second day however was a different story. We were riding along at a brisk pace and the bicycle seat suddenly snapped off the bicycle with my daughter in it causing her to violently hit the concrete, luckily she had a helmet on. I was enraged and immediately called Garrett who responded out to the scene and replaced the equipment. He also observed that the safety strap on the child seat wasn't attached, had it been this never would have happened, even with the metal bicycle seat attachments being corroded to the point of failure. Garrett ensured me that the safety strap is always engaged when the bike leaves the shop and almost seemed as if he was suggesting we removed it. Interestingly enough my sister rented the same type of bicycle from Ocean Cycles with the same type of child seat and miraculously the safety strap wasn't attached on that bicycle either. We contacted my daughters pediatrician and advised her of the situation and that my daughter had hit the ground so hard that her helmet was scratched, we were directed to IMMEDIATELY take her to the emergency room. After a 30 minute drive (both ways), 5 hours in the emergency room, a CT scan with my screaming terrified traumatized hyperventilating child, and a 100 dollar copay it was determined that my daughter was absolutely fine, thank goodness. Upon returning the bikes I conveyed to Garrett how lucky we all were that my little girl was ok and how angry I was about this PREVENTABLE accident which was a direct result of poor maintance and more importantly NEGLIGENCE. He told me he would refund me the cost of my child seat bicycle rental and give me a free rental next year. I told him he should refund me the cost of both bicycle rentals. I needed a very minor adjustment to my front derailleur was told could not give an estimate until looking at the bike but probably $20-30 and that the work could not be done until afternoon or next morning. Probably a 20 minute adjustment by a certified mechanic.
Called at 3PM to check on status and spoke to Garrett. I was told that he had a 2 day back log with a tone that led me to believe that my call was intrusive and my expectation was unreasonable at best.They could have told me of the 2 day back log at the time.
I chose to pick the bike up around 4PM. I was greeted by Garrett at which time I told him I would take the bike off his hands without repair.
His comment to me ........ " Really sorry your bike was next, I busted my ass to get this thing done after all the complaining you did." I asked him if he would complete the work to which he replied , " I ain't working on this bike" and I left the store.
I suspect that with customer service such as theirs they are not worried about this review and have all the work they can handle.
A beach cruiser rental might be the tops of what they can...
