Used to enjoy shopping here because it was cheaper than Albertson's, but now it's constantly under-stocked, under-staffed, and I was told during my last visit that they won't accept bringing your own mesh bags for the bulk items/vegetables (as opposed to their plastic bags), because their registers don't have the ability to subtract the weight of your bag from the overall weight. I told the cashier that that was fine; I was fine with being charged for the extra .5 ounces my personal bag weighed, no big deal. She said that management can see them on the camera and that it's considered overcharging, so the cashier will get in trouble if they let someone use a personal bag and asked me to use their plastic bags next time. Absolutely ridiculous. As long as the cashier makes the disclaimer, I should be allowed to give approval to charge me the extra 10 cents in exchange for using my own bag. Not everyone cares about whether they use plastic or not, but there's a growing trend of people who do, and S&F is going to sink if they don't update their policies/technology soon. It appears the management of Smart and Final doesn't know about the customer service of their store at Goleta. I wish I could never have to go to this awful store again. All the cashiers are so miserable, and I can't understand why. Is the pay bad? No, benefits? PLEASE find another job; treating customers the way you do is not good. PLEASE find something that can make you happy. Read moreI frequent this store regularly as this Smart & Final is very clean, well stocked and beautiful. The customer service, however, needs improvement. Today I was assisted by Tuan who was more interested in eating nuts at the register (I am highly allergic) than assisting me. I felt like a complete inconvenience to him, no smile or greeting at all. I bagged all my food myself even after he finished completing my payment, pushed the rest of my food aside to start ringing in the next guest. He threw my receipt next to my items that still needed to bagged and moved on to the next guest leaving me to struggle and hurried to get my food bagged and in to the cart.
