It's a good store, great employees, but they really have to do something about their meat department. Food safety there seems pretty sketchy. I got one of their packaged New York Strip cuts that said it was packed the day before, but for some reason was brown instead of red. Okay, I figured it was just exposed to oxygen and that's normal. The packaging was intact. Then I opened it up that night and it was rancid and super-sticky. I'm guessing it either sat out all day before they wrapped it, or they had it in the display case for a week, it didn't sell, so they wrapped it up and tried to sell it that way. Either way it violates food safety guidelines.
Then their fish station is open-air. A bunch of fish sitting on ice that people can sneeze on. Except the fish gets piled on top of each other, so the bottom fish are against ice but the top of the pile that they grab from is probably room temperature. Same with the cooked shrimp. I wouldn't touch any of that.
Also they're in a higher-income area (East Grand Rapids) but rarely have nicer cuts like New York Strip or Fillet Mignon. Maybe that's a business decision but they're missing out.
Then they rarely have chicken wings. Doesn't everybody like chicken wings? And when they do have them, it's the entire wing, uncut. Everybody else everywhere at least chops it into drumettes and wingettes and sells them like that, because they don't grill evenly when they're connected and not everybody has a bone saw or giant chef's knife to chop through the bones and joints. I thought that's the whole point of meat cutters preparing the meat for sale? Their meat department is just weird.
Deli is okay but quality of the pre-prepared foods that is the current rage of high-end grocery stores is pretty poor. They rarely have staples like potato or egg salad and their pre-prepared meals are pretty poor. Sushi is okay though, and they have a good selection of cheeses.
Overall though, their super-friendly staff, good selection of produce, sauces, eggs, dairy, soft drinks and sport drinks, beer & liquor and everything else other than meats makes it a decent community...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOn breton and burton in grand rapids So my total bill 25.08. However the 24 ct coffee pods are advertised as 10.99 for 24 and i had a coupon for 2.75. Great coupon. But the coffee rang up as 13.18. Then 2.19 was automatically deducted which made it 10.99 (no where on any sign does it say it is 13.18 then we will subtract 2.19 at the checkout to make your final cost 10.99). Deceptive. Anyway the cashier called the older gray haired manager to explain after some younger person thought it was straightened out. IT WAS NOT STRAIGHT. If the cost had come up as 10.99 no problem. It is the principle. Sign at the coffee pods should say final cost 10.99. Anyway the older manager comes over and takes my coffee off and then rescans it. Comes up 8.24 after my 2.75 coupon. However my total remained 25.08. When i told him the total couldnt be right because the total stayed the same even after he deducted and then he rang the coffee up again. Well he then.proceeded to raise his voice and told me the numbers were correct. I then proceeded to put my items on the conveyor and told them to give me back my coupons and delete my order. The manager should have at least attempted tp diffuse the situation. I told him as i was leaving that he needed to get a new job. This is also the store that has things so closely displayed in the produce section that if you are on a power cart you have areas that are not assessible to handicapped shoppers. I will drive to Family Fare if i need to shop for deals. Going to he a long time before i go to...

They were very apologetic gave me a complete refund and went above and beyond to make things right with me. I know these are challenging times for anyone in retail and management at that time was covering shelf check out and the customer service desk and was way over burdened. I have been assured greater things are on the horizon for several D&W's. Because when things have to be right this is my go to store. Its not the closes D&W to me but its worth the drive.
