I have been waiting months since TF opened and took the chance to give them a visit.
First impressions: small, smaller than the photos on facebook and google made it seem but that by no means is a bad thing. Its tucked away in a corner of the neighborhood and is just perfect in its size.
Climbing: the grades go off the V standard in most gyms but each "grade" combines two grades to make one. They are graded quite harshly and while i am a v3 climber at my main gym, i couldnt climb the v2-v3 grades. I really enjoyed the diversity of the routes as well as the difficulty.
Facilty: Terra Firma has 2 levels, the main level and a second level with 2 separate landings, one for a more aggressive overhang and another for warming up, freeweight and body weight exercise as well as a campus board.
Staff: the staff there was super freindly, didnt out goingly try to pursue conversation but was more than happy to help with any questions and answered in detailed and wanted to make sure we had a good time. Terra firma definitely picked a great staff for this location and i hope it gains popularity.
Over-all experience: i cant reccomend this place enough for climbers looking for a different experience in their climbing career. I dont know if i would reccomend new climbers as the grades can be a bit harsh but i wouldn't discourage it. Staff and the community are super friendly and willing to encourage everyone trying to send their routes. Ill definitely be making time for another visit whwn im in the area, great job guys!...
Read moreI went on an across-state climbing gym tour! this was one of our first stops, but I have been here a few times before.
Compared to Holland's Scrapyard or Detroit's Dyno Detroit Climb, I would say that it's the middle child in size. It's very spacious and gives you make-shift 360 climbing experience. There are several walls to climb on; When you enter there is a overhang, at the sides are two slab walls, and behind it all is a combination of the both. Above the reception area is a regular gym which overed a combination of free weight, machines, and cables.
I would say that the routes are graded fairly and offer a reasonable selection of difficulties for beginners and experts. The holds and gym itself is very well maintained and cleaned. The front desk area is neatly presented and their selection for apparel is impressively designed and stylish. Unlike Dyno, they don't get too much into selling shoes or climbing gear and focus primarily on their own merchandise. I will always be disappointed in myself for not buy one of their hats that were on sale, but I have not seen it since!
I would consider this a family friendly gym for all ages, but also a hotspot for college students and climbers alike! If you're looking to try every climbing gym in Michigan, this a...
Read moreReally enjoyed this bouldering facility 🙂 Our home, rock climbing gym, is Planet Rock and we decided to take a day trip here since it is new and we have kids on break preparing for divisions (competition).
Great facility, lots of routes, clean, affordable, many bathrooms, a yoga room, a break/WiFi eating area, men's and women's dressing room with lockers (bring your own lock), a very nice and large workout area with campus board/moon board/practice board as well as workout bench, lift bar, rings and more. There's nice seating and cubbies around to watch and project.
As far as the actual bouldering goes, the routes are labeled and grouped together (V0-1, V2-3, V4-5, V6-7, V8+). There is a lot of variety of each grade on slab and overhang. There's a kids wall as well for the littles 😊 There has been a guest setter and he has done a fabulous job! We enjoyed attempting (and succeeding) at many of the routes, the kids enjoyed talking to the setter, owners and workers. Very personable, polite and down to earth group of people. Can't wait to hear about what lies ahead for...
