The Derby — Restaurant in Grand Rapids

We just moved into the area and were visiting the local bars. They had a few beers on tap, but we're out of two of them. So I had a Jim beam rye whiskey, when I asked for a refill the bartender said I drank the last of it. We felt like having a snack so we asked if we could order some food, the bartender said they only had hotdogs (great I like hotdogs) but she said they were out of hotdog buns. I grew up in the neighborhood where the Derby is located and never went in there once. Everyone said it was just the typical dive. I wish I had ignored all that and just gone. I went with friends and we spent three hours drinking cheap beer and playing pool and you know what, it was the most fun I've had in a bar maybe ever. Spent our honeymoon in Grand Rapids, had an Air B&B just a few blocks away from The Derby. Didn't have anything but a very welcoming experience. The owners Nick and Michael were awesome with recommendations and making us feel at home. Will visit again! Great spot to meet the locals!! Dart boards from the 90s were killer and a nice level pool table!
