This is the best, most collector-friendly, most affable, and most affordable retro video game store in the Midwest. I've been a video game collector and preservationist for 17 years. I've visited retro shops in 3 countries and 8 States. Even NY, probably one of the most high-demand places for retro and stores of the like. I even once managed a retro store there. Our practices didn't even come close to Game Together despite our best efforts amid high foot traffic. I visited the store with my fiancée on our way home from a weekend trip in WI. When you walk in, the store speakers serenade you with a playlist of game tunes from across the decades, at the perfect volume to be able to both enjoy and still speak or think. The displays are laid out by console with the most important things arranged in a way that is eye-catching without being boastful. The store is neat, organized, and well lit, with nothing out of place or in a spot that doesn't make sense. The owner Steve and his employees engaged us in knowledgeable conversation across a bevy of topics, and everyone was jazzed to talk to a seasoned collector. I've been in the scene for long enough to have seen store after store scoff or roll their eyes when "that one guy" walks in, as though it is a hassle to deal with the people who likely are the largest reason they even exist. No, instead we were treated hospitably. I wish I'd made the acquaintances of the employees, but I ended up in a conversation with Steve regarding his rarest and most expensive things. When he showed them to me, he spoke of them in a way that exuded unbridled childhood delight rather than braggadocio. He was proud to have his store and his rare things without thinking about making a killing on sales. Someone who's in it not just for the profit, but for the culture, for the games. As a collector, one of the most important things to me when I purchase previously-loved games is condition. I've spent hours scrubbing, swabbing, wiping, restoring, repairing, de-gunking, you name it. And it's all fun and a part of the adventure of collecting, but when the games are clean and loved from the get-go, HOO BOY, that gets me going, especially as a preservationist. And man, did these games deliver. I swear these games were meticulously cleaned and handled delicately before they were ever put on the shelves. The games I bought felt smooth and almost new to the touch, despite them all being well out of print for years and years, and each being preowned. Price stickers were either immensely easy to remove or were placed on a protective outer sleeve so as not to bond to the merchandise. I didn't have to clean a single game, they all just went right into my collection. Even their consoles are shrink-wrapped to avoid dust or moisture damage. And the PRICES. Again, I lived in New York, I collected in New York. It is so insane how high the demand is for retro games there. Every retro game store marks their games up by sometimes as much as 50% common retail value. This place? A trivial, modest markup to meet the cost of operation, and seemingly not a penny more. I went home happy without the anxiety of finances weighing on me, as is common with most hobbies these days. If you haven't been to this store and you are considering it, let me save you the decision fatigue and command you to go. You're doing yourself a disservice if you pass it up. You won't be disappointed. And this is all without mentioning that there is a free-to-play arcade in the back, with seven or eight wonderfully selected games, including two pinball machines, and I was encouraged to go and play without having bought anything at all yet. Steve even cheered me on to beat the high score on Arkanoid. What a dude, what a store. And I'd like to add here at the end that they didn't pay me to write this, I expect nothing in return for the review, they had no idea I was going to write a review, and, probably the most important thing these days, I did not craft this review using AI. I'm a linguistics scientist and this is how I...
Read moreAbsolutely fantastic experience. Very very neat, well put together and organized. Prices are fair, perhaps you could find stuff cheaper in eBay, but buying in-store gives you peace of mind that you have an authentic game that will work. Again, prices are fair nothing is outrageous. People are always so kind- donât be too upset if you arenât attended to right away, the store gets busy and of course they want to get around to you. Both times I went I was asked if I was looking for anything specific and told I could ask any questions which they were always happy to answer. The first time I went the store was not busy at all, but the gentleman who greeted me didnât keep bothering me, pushing me to buy, etc. He just gave me a smile, offered help if I needed, and sat back down. I can really appreciate that as many stores in general are pushing a sale at you. Considering I was an easy target with not a lot of people, Iâm happy this wasnât the case. The second time I went it was pretty busy, a Saturday at opening time. I believe they have new stuff in stock Saturdays? They have a Youtube channel that shows whatâs getting put out which is nice. Anyways, very busy but my friends and I were still addressed, greeted, etc. My brother wanted a DS Lite, and he explained how they sell fast, told us about the Youtube page and that we could scoop one up when it gets restocked. Very transparent and offered an alternative instead of just a âno sorry donât have any.â In the busy store he was hopping around, tending to everyone possible, and being efficient rather than sit around and wait for people to come ask questions. Again, not pushy at all whatsoever but being polite and helpful! My friends got a Wii actually, I didnât buy anything that time. Thereâs a free arcade! Free! I enjoyed pinball while looking at the great selection. I mean, he could easily charge a quarter but itâs free. Where do you find free anything nowadays? Just the icing on the cake. This was a long review, thanks for reading. If you arenât sure if you wanna go, hesitant for any reason, just go! Youâll be treated well whether youâre a paying customer or not. Only been twice, I donât know all the staff. Go get some cool stuff! Great...
Read moreWill never do business here again! The owner seems to be very unauthentic. When the store first opened I inquired about the trade in or pay out of items and I was assured they were very competitive in that regard. When I did make the trip out there with some games they wanted to give me less than GameStop which was somewhat shocking. I purchased a Simpsons hit and run game for the PS2. It did not say anywhere that the game was damaged but when I got home i noticed a small crack in the inner circle which causes the game to rattle while spinning. When I asked about it they were unwilling to give a refund or an exchange. Today the owner flat out said to my face âI donât do deals to break even Iâm here to make money.â This is obvious, but such an unprofessional and pathetic thing to say to a customer. Especially when cultivating relationships is the way businesses flourish. It seems like they only care about money which I wish I would have known from the beginning, very...
