It was a pretty good experience. Purchased the 3 mile canoe trip. The place was easy enough to find via Google maps. They had flush toilets with a small shower on-site. Didn't get in the water on the trip so stayed clean and dry so didn't need the shower. Typical staff of mostly shirtless young men that were pleasant to engage with during purchase and return trip. Arrived shortly before 2pm on a Monday. Received a discounted rate of $20 total for me and the wife. Grabbed an oar and life jacket for each of us. One of the staff assisted us into the canoe, pointed it and us in the right direction then we shoved off. The entire 3 mile trip was within city limits. There was traffic, construction and normal city sounds for most of the ride. For that reason I kind of wished we would have done 7 miles. The weather was a little suspect so we opted for the shorter trip to be safe. The naming of the place was a little confusing but not enough for us not to know where to stop and wait for a ride. The name we mapped was Shipley's canoe livery. The name on the sign and on the map for the 3 mile stop was River Zen and the name on the van giving us a ride back was Loudonville canoe livery. Again, not confusing enough to impact the trip but worth noting here. The river was nice with a handful of ripples and only a couple of times touching bottom but never enough to have to get out and push. It was 2 of us in the canoe with a combined weight of about 420 lbs. Saw lots of Canadian geese and even got within about 10 ft of a family of blue winged teal. They appeared to also be on vacation. The little ones were playing under a drain pipe emptying into the river while mom and dad were relaxing on a sand/gravel bar on the opposite side. We said hello but I don't think they spoke human. So, we waved and carried on our merry way with fair winds and a following current. Overall, good enough to put a checkmark next to canoeing on our to do list for our stay in Mohican and to snap a couple good pics...
Read moreShipley's is great. We have been going to loudonville for years to kayak and canoe down the mohican river. We have always gone to the larger livery's.
We now have a dog and purchased her own raft. We contacted the livery with the large "yellow" adventure signage. Explaining to them that we wanted to float on tubes with our dog who had her own tube. We were willing to pay for an extra tube. They told us we couldn't do it, they don't allow dogs. Though we have canoed using their equipment and services 5-6 times this summer with our dog.
We contacted the other Livery with the "Red" signage, which we constantly use too . Our family has a permanent year round camper spot with them as well. They also said NO.
We contacted Shipley's, explained to them what we wanted to do. They said absolutely not a problem. They were super nice, and treated us very well. We also found out how much inexpensive they are compared to the...
Read moreWe wanted something outside of the normal party on the River. We went on a Thursday morning right after opening and did the 3 mile trip due to some rain coming through at some point during the day. It was just long enough for us for this trip. This section of the River has no other liveries on it. I will say this, before going anywhere else, give this place a try. It’s local, family owned, and it happens to be the cheapest livery. When we went, the 3 mile trip ends right where the two huge liveries start. We could hear the “safety talk” being given at another livery. About 10 minutes later, the river was full of paddle-craft and rafts. Looked like a terrible time. Oh did I mention shipleys is a dog friendly rental? Talked to everyone about our golden and had such a warm welcome. Even transporting in the van.
Overall, thanks for the...
