As a seasoned cook and baker possibly looking to open a new storefront, I had high hopes that this market near my new home in Hastings would fit the bill as my new goods supplier.
First thought, the prices are higher than average. I am known for overspending for good quality so this is not a deal breaker. The meat counter was ok for the average quick home meal but could use less variety of steaks and patties and more options for better quality roast and tenderloins. This had me pacing, looking for the a viable option until I finally had to pass.
I really wanted to fit the entire holiday table this year with local market goods but ended up going to the supermarket down the street and am shocked to have found exactly the quality cuts I was looking for. I won’t mention the price gap as it is hard to compete with supermarket discounts.
Tom’s has potential to be a local jewel within the surrounding counties and neighboring cities if they put more emphasis on butchering and seafood mongering and less on the convenient store genre. Hastings has a ton of convenient stores, but very little options in processing. As fast as Hastings is growing, I have high hopes Tom’s will grow in the right direction...
Read moreTom's Market is a complete Grocery Store. They have the best quality of meat, poultry and seafood in S.W. Michigan. Tom's Meats are served by many of the local restaurants too. All meat and deli is packaged per your order. You will not be waiting in line at Tom's for this great personal service because they are exceptionally well staffed. I also love that my meat is wrapped in Butcher's paper exactly to order. No extra work repackaging my purchases. Tom's does it all right there. They also carry a large variety of specialty salads, homemade jerky, cheeses and more. The Produce section is always fresh with local fruits and vegetables. They carry a good amount of popular breads, donuts, candy and Tom's different kinds of Spice blends, marinades etc. The prices $$ are extremely reasonable. In fact most prices are significantly lower than the larger grocery stores. The people that work here always are very welcoming and helpful. I really enjoy going grocery shopping at Tom's. I think if you haven't stopped in to check this place out you should. It's a truly enjoyable...
Read moreTom's was the friendly market when i was a kid. Still a great place for meat. The problem is with the cashier. I bought a pop with the dimes in my console and was told i can't be doing this. She didn't want to count them. I was embarrassed as if i had broken some rule and counted them for her. She said just go and don't pay with change in the future. I decided I'd had enough and asked for a refund and to speak with a manager. The manager said they don't have time to count the change because others might be waiting for checkout. I was hoping for a sorry for the attitude or I'll take note of it or something. I feel she was dismissive. I don't pay in change very often. If it's a bottle of pop ill use change if i have it. Unless I'm looking for a particular cut of meat im happy to hit walmart and gas stations. Save some money on Tom's over priced items. They aren't...
