We LOVE this place!!! Our 8-year-old daughter has been participating in the youth program for a little over a year and began without any martial arts experience. When searching for a martial arts program, we were looking for a place that would not only teach her self-defense but would not be intimidating for her. We wanted to stay away from any program that would appear cold or militant toward the children. Our family has been pleased by what Meng’s has had to offer. Sifu Brad, Disihing Daniel, and Sihing Kevin, while all strong at promoting discipline and technical proficiency, also demonstrate exceptional patience and mutual respect for the children. We have seen them utilize supportive redirection when needed and have never seen them use negative punitive techniques. They also provide motivators for the children to include games and stripes for demonstration of proper “focus” and “discipline.” The children receive lessons on goal-setting, social interactions, humility, and respect to name a few. We have noticed that they also practice what they preach. They take part in a non-profit program to feed the hungry and have also offered free anti-bullying and anti-abduction workshops to the community. As parents, we have truly appreciated the way in which Meng’s has made it a point to include us in our child’s learning and excitement for her programming. We have taken part in parent participation nights where we were invited to train with her, a Halloween party, a Kung-Fu Panda movie outing complete with an appearance by Kung Fu Panda, and an awards ceremony where children were recognized by an award of character. This was all separate from the many belt ceremonies we also were invited to witness. We appreciate their influence on our daughter so much that we have also enrolled her in their summer camps as well as periodic private lessons. We are incredibly proud to have Meng’s be a part of our child’s learning in character development and self-defense. As part of this review we asked our daughter how she would describe Brad, Daniel, and Kevin and she said “They’re very nice and they make you feel very sure and like you can do it because you have people that think you can do it and support you.” It can’t be said better...
Read moreIt was about 6 months ago that I was looking to put my 7 year old son in a sport he was playing tackle football. Two seasons in the league and hard work that he put and frienships made I decided to make the difficult decision to take my son out. The coaches had good practices and training but they where not good role models for the kids in my opinion. They would cuss on the field get angry in front of the kids and several other things. Then other leagues that I looked into they where real passive and not challenged my son in anyway. Until we walked into Mengs Martial Arts in Katy my son was not interested at first I would have never considered it as well since I loved football and sometimes as parents we want our kids to do what we want but my husband has background in martial arts in the military and suggested it.The second time we walked in my son decided to try a trial class that they offer free of charge. I sat in and there was a balance in the place that can't be described just felt he came out of class wanting me to sign him up and so I did. My husband was impressed with Sifu's knowledge and ability. Our journey began and I started to see a change in my son for the better both in his physical abilities as well as his behavior. He respects Sifu Brad Ryan as well as all of his instructors because they are all like minded. For the first time he brought all A's in his report card. We have several Martial arts schools around us in Cypress yet we go out to Katy on a 35 minute drive four times a week because in my opinion this school is a positive enviorment for my son. They cater to any level or personality of your child. There are times when I am getting home from work tiered and make up my mind if my son is not ready to go with his Gi on then we are taking a break today but it never fails I pull in the drive way and he is ready to go. Now my daughter is expresing an interest in joining and even a...
Read moreMy 6 year old son has been attending Mengs Martial Arts of Katy for over 2 and a half years, and we have been extremely happy with the results. He has much more self-control than when we started, gets lots of exercise during the classes, and has learned how and when to defend himself . One of the things that drew us to Mengs to begin with was the real-word application of kung fu. I’ve been really happy with the fact that they don’t just focus on punching and kicking, but all aspects of defending yourself, including groundwork, grappling, etc. We have been recommending Mengs to all of our friends and family ever since the first month of attending.
We researched and visited many of the martial arts schools in the Katy area, but ultimately decided on Mengs due to the mix of martial arts and fun that the students seemed to have during our class sit-in. They have really put a wonderful program together that utilizes just enough discipline to teach the children respect, but not so much that it scares and intimidates the children. This is especially effective with the younger children in their tiny tigers program, which is where we started.
The instructors at Mengs are also very caring of their students. They are more than willing to spend a little one-on-one time with any child that might be having any difficulties not only in martial arts, but outside of the classroom as well. Our son was having some problems early on with controlling his anger, and we were able to sit down with sifu many times to discuss things he can do to help control his anger. And coming from his martial arts instructor, and not just from his “parents” really seemed to reach him. As a parent having any extra tools to help is always a plus. This is one of the many reasons we hope to be part of the Mengs Family for a long...
