I remember the days when she cared for birds at her home and that was fine until new people came & the neighbors complained (not having the Keys spirit themselves) & Ms. Laura had to leave and she was no spring chicken then, but, she was strong & fought for a place to do what was sorely needed. That was sad and unfair and a whole lot of hard work. But slowly & with her constant dedication to life for birds, she & other women mainly helping & local funding it was moved to the area its in now. Cages and trails were built, people finally recognized how valuable she and her place was. Things like blenders were gone through at an alarming rate, mixing medicine and food and not just helping birds, she would help you if your squirrel had eaten something bad. She would make time for your problem & help. She always knew what she was doing, she was a gift that many people just didn't recognize at first, now its obvious. Its become the epitome of the word...
Read moreI called a few days ago with a very unique and specific question about how to clean snake saliva off of a chick and the woman on the phone was the absolute friendliest! She told me how to properly give a baby bird a Dawn soap bath (I didn’t even know there was a specific way to do it! Dawn customer line recommended I call a bird sanctuary bc of it) told me how to tell if she’s badly hurt or just sore and even taught me a bit about snakes! She was so helpful and it was so sweet that she thanked me for caring so much :’) Thanks a ton FL Keys Wild Bird Rehab center!

What we got was Kevin who gave us a full tour and knew most of the birds by name. The birds recognized him as well. His enthusiasm and humor were contagious and captivating. Both of my grade school aged kids enjoyed it. It's a shame we stopped there on the way out though bc throughout the tour he made suggestions of other places to visit in the area that I would have loved to follow up on. The best part is this place runs on donations only, so no admission though by the end you'll want to put some money toward the center. They have both cash buckets and a screen that accepts...
