We went into the Visitors Center by chance and instantly fell in love with the place. The wonderful lady seated at the welcome center treated my grandson like royalty. She talked to him on his level, showing him different things to do within Kinston, listening patiently as he explained why we needed things within walking distance and together they discovered a mutual love for the nature park. I know I will recommend a side trip...

However, confederate statue and flags should have context plaques placed with them, acknowledging these symbols' association with the history of slavery and racism in the south, and the reasons the civil war was fought. The website does not say the Visitor's Center is closed; however, the door is locked and the sign in the door say's "Sorry, we are closed until it's safe to reopen." That is very disappointing and absolutely ridiculous over a year after covid started. If you wait to live your life until it's safe, you will never live.
