As a United States Marine Corps veteran with a Greenbelt in MCMAP, discipline, camaraderie, and respect have always been core values in my life. After getting out of the Corps, I put on some weight—currently at 265—and I’ve been searching for the right environment to push myself, regain my focus, and work toward my goal of stepping into organized fights. Less than a week ago, I decided to jump in headfirst and signed up at Knoxville Martial Arts Academy. I didn’t bother with trial classes; I wanted to fully commit, and I’m so glad I did.
From the moment I walked in, I was treated with the utmost respect by everyone—staff, coaches, and other students alike. There’s a welcoming atmosphere here that’s hard to find, especially in the MMA world. Coach Dan and Coach Em are absolutely phenomenal. They’re not just running a class; they’re truly invested in your growth. They break everything down step by step, take the time to ensure you understand the techniques, and encourage questions without making you feel out of place, no matter your skill level. That individual attention and care are rare and incredibly appreciated.
Starting this week, I’ll be attending the 6 AM Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes and the 7:30 PM mixed martial arts classes Monday through Friday. I’m genuinely excited to dive into this schedule and immerse myself in the training. It’s not just the structure of the classes that’s impressive—it’s the culture here. Every handshake is firm, every interaction is genuine, and the sense of mutual respect and encouragement is palpable. In some other gyms I’ve visited in Knoxville, it felt like I was just a number. At KMAA, I feel like I’m part of something much bigger.
I’d be remiss not to mention that the membership is on the pricier side, but honestly, you get what you pay for. The quality of instruction, the care and expertise of the coaches, and the level of training here are worth every single penny. This isn’t just a place to work out; it’s a place to grow, challenge yourself, and build the skills and mindset you need to succeed, whether in competition or in life.
Knoxville Martial Arts Academy is hands down the real deal. If you’re looking for a gym where you’ll be respected, supported, and pushed to be your best, look no further. I’m beyond grateful to have found KMAA and can’t wait to see what I can accomplish here with the guidance of coaches like Dan and Em and the support of this incredible community.
Thank you, KMAA, for helping me reignite my passion and take the first step toward my goals....
Read moreMy experiences at KMAA mainly come from the kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes. Both classes have fantastic structuring and instructors to enhance the learning experience. I will explain my thoughts on both classes in more detail below.
Kickboxing is what initially got me interested in martial arts and I can’t say I was disappointed. The classes are very technique and cardio driven. By learning a specific punch, kick, or combo and implementing that with exercises to make the heart race makes for an exciting and educational class. Also noting that new drills are practiced every week, as well as, having a rotation of instructors make sure that the material is fresh and taught from multiple points of view.
I have less experience with BJJ, but the results so far have been encouraging. Of the classes that I have attended, there is a main focus on mobility and technique. The instructor I have had for most of my classes, a man by the name of Dre, is very concentrated on technique (which I am a fan of) and goes into great detail to make sure his students fully understand all of the motions and reasoning of a certain movement. By allowing practitioners to practice a technique on both partners and himself allows for a great level of understanding and retention.
Overall, I am very impressed with KMAA. Each class has a profound degree of professionalism, efficiency, comradery, and fun that individuals of all ages can enjoy. Would highly recommend this facility to any...
Read moreI can't even begin to tell you what KMAA means to our family. My son started classes here almost two years ago in Little Dragons with Coach Chris and Coach Emilee and I was blown away with how, patient, respectful and genuinely caring they are with each child. My son has gained so much confidence because of them and KMAA.
My only personal regret is that I didn't start classes myself sooner. When I finally worked up the nerve to try a class 6 months ago it instantly felt like I found a part of me I didn't know was missing. Coach Jason is an incredible kickboxing coach who instantly made me feel welcome and also made sure my daughter felt included when she joined us over her break. I love how each instructor breaks things down so you can understand it and they are all so patient.
KMAA is definitely a family affair for the Wilders. Coach David's BJJ class has given my husband and I a new activity to learn and grow at together and we look forward to those classes each week. I guess to make a long story short, if you're thinking about taking classes but just haven't made the leap yet this is your sign to JUMP! I PROMISE you...
