Texas humane Heroes in Leander TX. has made my heart happy. After losing my Rotties after 10 years I never thought I could be so happy again. We adopted Rollo our Boxer. He is our love. I'm so in love with him my days are for spoiling him. And when my husband gets home he gets to enjoy him and play with him and treat him with what he wants. Going to the pet stores, Walmart, Walks, Home Depot. Playing in the yard. laying with me and being silly with his toys and playing with his homemade treats and treats from Petco. He is so so silly. My husband and I were in search of a rescue dog. We thought with all of the love and spoiling I have always done with all of my animals we wanted to love one dog unconditionally for their life as they love us, we need to protect and love them equally. We had discusses the breed of animal we could have due to our yard size, Our house is big but not the yard. House dogs don't need a big yard I say!! And I prefer large breeds. In WA. on vacation we were talking, a Boxer is the kind of dog I would love to have, Their so funny and silly and happy and bouncy and just want to please you and make you happy. And on this Sunday we were at the last shelter looking at dogs but all of the dogs we saw all day didn't bond with us or were scared and boring so they say hey there's a shelter 2 miles down the road called Texas Humane Heroes do you know of them? We said no, because when we did a search of the area It never came up on the Google search. I was getting bummed out because I had my heart set on one certain dog. Well we drive up and there's Rollo (We renamed him) He had been sick twice and had been in quarantine so he would get better and that day he was just brought out minutes before we arrived. My heart jumped I was so happy, He was so beautiful, Looked a little sad though. I took him out and we immediately bonded. He was jumping and spinning and being silly as Boxers are. I knew he was my baby to care for. We said I will be back on Tuesday when you open to bring him home. I felt horrible for not taking him home that day but I needed to buy things for him, Best day of my life. Monday I went out and spent a few hundred dollars on him ((-: I started the spoiling. Then my husband did a little spoiling also. Rollo needs an awesome comfy bed he says. Texas Humane Heroes animal shelter is the best shelter I have ever been in. The staff is wonderful and so sweet, answered all of our questions if answers know. Big Air Conditioner fans on both ends of the dog area to keep the hot TX. air moving so the animals would be more comfortable. Every kennel is super clean with fresh water and elevated beds. The animals are so well taken care of to the best of their ability, Funds permitting. I know shelters have limited food and needed items for every animal so they do their utmost best and make sure every animal does not go hungry. they are fed well and medical needs addressed so when you adopt you have a happy healthy pet to bring home. The play area is really big so you can run and play with the animals and so how they react to you, on and off leash. There are deer and wildlife there for the dogs to see with giant shade trees to help keep the ground cool. It's rough in TX. keeping such place comfortable. If I could I would save the world from all of the bad people that are mean to animals. Rollo is such a special dog. Thank you Texas Humane Heroes, Leander TX. for rescuing Rollo and keeping him safe while his forever family found him and brought him home. He is home forever with his family that was meant to love him. He has blessed our hearts as you have blessed mine. Thank you for coming into my life. He will never be left alone ever no where. He is my service dog...
Read moreUPDATE! Texas Humane Heroes is one of the incredible animal rescue organizations in the Leander area. Although II have left a prior written review, we have utilized their services many times. They spay and neuter dogs and cats for a reasonable fee. They also have vet tech appointments had an affordable rate. You can take your pet in for vaccines and I really like the fact that you can make an appointment for that although they have certain times that are available for walk-ins as well. They have a well used building at the end of a very long driveway. One of the things I want to be sure to say is that there is a beautiful large new building up toward the front of the property and it looks like it's almost completed. We could see lots of kennels installed inside it in different areas, so although we are not certain, we believe it's going to be a new location for the rescues at Texas Humane Heroes! It appears to be an air-conditioned facility, which will be wonderful (especially in the summer ) because currently dogs are housed primarily in outdoor kennels-That they try to protect from the harshest weather. This weekend we attended a Chili Cook Off, which is an annual event supporting the facility and the animals !!!! It was the first chili cookoff I have ever attended in all of my 72 years. It was wonderful there were about a dozen different groups that cooked and distributed tastings of chili . Between them were a few of the dog services available for training, boarding, and daycare in the Leander area. Admission was $25 regardless of age . Calendars and T-shirts were also available for purchase, we actually bought 2 (two) Of the cups that were available for $10 each (and were an awesome value for anyone who chose to drink beer and wine) as those were included along with soda pop in the price of the cup!!! I really have to commend the teams in the chili cook off !!!! There was a wide variety and we didn't taste anything we thought was not in the "good" taste category. Of course we had three tickets to vote with and they went to our top three chili tastes which we felt were in the "excellent " taste category . The cloudy humid weather without rain was very tolerable. I'm hoping to see a post of the money generated by this event. By the way, they also had a silent auction with quite a variety of items that could be bid on. Once you buy your ticket, you get access to it. Much thanks to all the volunteers, the teams, and the community that...
Read moreI volunteer there and I love it, but when I tried to adopt a puppy from the Killeen center it was the complete opposite. I go to college up in Belton and I live in the dorms, but I come home on weekends and my parents work. When I wrote on the adoption application that in a 24 hour period the dog would spend all of its time outside with the dogs I already own, they told me that they wouldn't let us adopt because of that and they gave us the reason of the dogs not being up to date on vaccines and it being outside with the other dogs is not right despite the fact that my dogs are completely vaccinated and there is no instances of any illnesses going around my neighborhood. Because I volunteer there I didn't want to make a scene, but I really wanted to ask them, if that was the case, why did they have all of the puppies with the older dogs in the kennels, instead of in the Puppy Pen that is in a different room. They were in just as much danger in the kennel that they would be in the fenced backyard at my house. They said that they wanted the dog to stay inside all the time and we said that is not possible (my dad does not like dogs inside, especially large breeds). Even if I were to commute, all three of us (my parents and I) would be gone from 7am-4pm Monday-Friday and none of us would leave a dog inside by itself for 9 hours, its not right and its not fair to the dog either. Then they questioned the way that we raised our two dogs (one is 15 and the other is 6). We've had both since they were 3 months and they are both extremely healthy, so I was really offended with that. We own the house we live in so I saw no problem. They also knew that we were looking specifically for a puppy and when they denied us the puppy they said "You could adopt an older dog", and I told them that is not possible since our oldest will not accept a dog older than a year and we were set on that puppy. This was plainly saying, "You guys work, you go to school. Why are you trying to adopt? You don't have the 'privilege' to adopt because all of you are actually doing something productive and earning a living." Get some realistic standards on your adoption standards and actually follow you own rules before you actually force your "ideal" on everybody else. I understand you want good homes for the animals, but that is...
