Superior Grocers — Local services in Long Beach

Lately I've been experimenting with different chile verde and chili colorado recipes in a so far unsuccessful replication of one of my all-time favorite Mexican restaurants specialty dishes. Unfortunately it's kitchen prepared these for the last time many years ago. Being relatively new to the area, I needed a place that could supply my quest with anything it may need. Superior grocers seem to be my best bet. So several successful shopping safaris (say that fast five times) coming home not only with the ingredients that I needed, but sometimes helpful hints from team members of their well-stocked meat or produce departments or a friendly shopper sharing their not-so-secret family recipes with me. They hire security guards who harass the customers. One insisted on giving me his phone number; did not let me leave until I provided it. I even lied and said I was with someone. Was not enough—and not the first time. I stopped going since.

Last straw was tonight. Planet Fitness next door was stacked, so my friend parked in Superior’s lot (legally!!). Security guard was staking the truck. We asked if there was a problem, he said no. One hour later, we left the gym and discovered the car getting towed—courtesy of El Superior. The tow man confirmed it. My friend was forced to pay over $200.

Now my friend, who was also a regular customer, will never go back.

Overall my experience here has been positive.

Usually when I buy Superior branded milk from here, it ends up being expired. I go straight home after getting groceries so I doubt it my fault. I noticed sometimes some of the produce on the produce shelves next to the wall look like they are starting to yellow/brown -ing. One thing that bothers me the most is how a lot of the taco meat that is fresh from the butcher department tends to have a decent amount of bone. I avoid buying taco meat here. I appreciate the selection here. Selection I noticed tends to go down a lot when shopping in the evenings. The bakery and tortillia departments are great.
