A little piece of Mexico!

I have lived in the Abilene area for over 7 years and if there is one thing that I have found Abilene lacking in, is real Mexican food or even decent Tex Mex for that matter. Well, not anymore! I cannot believe this treasure has been hidden from me all this time. Although, La Mexican is listed a meat Market, it is way more then just a meat market; it s a little piece of Mexico in Abilene Texas. It is a Mexican import supermarket as well as a little cafe that sells REAL Mexican food. Having grown up in Mexico, I can say that when I walked into La Mexicana for the first time, I felt like I was back in Mexico. The food here is beyond great. It is true authentic Mexican food, NOT TexMex, which is what every other restaurant in Abilene thinks is "Authentic Mexican Cuisine" (What a joke!).

I heard about La Mexicana from a friend that saw it and we went by to check it out. They serve "Caldo de Res", and it must be good, because I have yet to get to taste it because they are always sold out, even though they cook about a 20 gallon pot of it each day. On the first day I went here, they had some real, fresh homemade coconut candy that tasted just like the stuff I use to buy off the street vendors down in the Yacatan when I was a kid. It tasted so good I almost cried and I was instantly transported back to my childhood in Mexico. On my second visit, they had some homemade hot elote tamales for sale and they were just as good as the ones I have had in Mexico as well.

I can't wait to go back and see what they have next time. If you live in Abilene or are just traveling through and you want to experience a little piece of Mexico and have a chance at some REAL Mexican food, you need to stop by and try out...

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. I went to buy some candy for my kids, and when I paid the cashier ,Jose , gave me my change wrong, I told him I gave him a 20 dl bill and he responded back, with an offensive and disrespectful attitude , that I was wrong. I told him I only had that 20 dl bill , and he said I was wrong, his attitude was threatening, so I requested to talk to the manager. David, the manager , came and I told him the situation, he asked Jose , I said that I was wrong, and I asked David to look at the security video so he could confirm that I gave him a 20 dl.bill. he refused to do it and said will check by the end of the day. I asked him for his telephone number, I felt they didn't care at all for me as their customer or person. I just wanted to give a treat to my kids and this situation was frustrating and disrespectful in so many ways. It took until the next day for David to call me back and said I WAS RIGHT JOSE MADE A MISTAKE. And Jose refused to give me an apology for the way he treated me and David , said he couldn't do anything about it. ...

I've been mostly happy with this place. The produce is the best part of this place. The meat is usually good too. But lately, one of the butchers has been rude. He flirts and gives me great cuts when I shop alone. When I shop with my husband, he gives me the wrong cut of meat. He gives me frozen meat that weighs much less after it's defrosted. All the butchers make cat calls when women are in the store. I've been shopping here for 20 years. I hope they talk to those guys or replace them. They make shopping...
