I'm a 33 year old, 8 handicap, who works in the golf industry and felt the need to share my experience at Maynard Golf Course.
It pains me to give a 1 star review to this little gem that I have enjoyed playing for the last 10 years but I have never been treated so poorly by golf staff in my entire life. "Mike" in the pro-shop and "Ernie" the ranger are an embarrassment to the industry and don't belong anywhere near a customer-service oriented business, let alone a golf club. Right off the bat Mike was rude and intimidating. Out of nowhere he tells us if we break any rules we'll be kicked off the course. That's one way to welcome your guests. We shrugged it off, paid the very reasonable $28 to walk nine and went down to the first hole.
After teeing off we immediately realized we were being tailed very closely by Ernie the ranger in his obnoxious gas cart. After 2 holes we were pretty sick of hearing Ernie drive full throttle in circles around us while he ignored everyone else on the golf course, so I asked him "why are you following us around?" He responds: "I'm a ranger, I can do whatever I want". We continued to ask him why he was harassing us and what we did to make him follow us around. He provided no clear explanation other than we were "loud-mouths" and then drove away to get Mike.
Moments later Mike and Ernie came back in the cart together and after an unproductive conversation we decided it would be best if we walked off and took our business down the road to Stow Acres. We were disappointed to leave after 2 holes because the golf course is actually a fun little layout designed by Ross disciple Wayne Stiles. But being intimidated, followed around and treated like a criminal is inexcusable and completely ruins any golf experience.
If you are looking for a relaxing round of golf where you're treated with respect, don't play at Maynard. Some other good options in the area are Stow Acres, Quail Ridge, Shaker Hills, Sandy Burr and Wayland Country Club.
EDITED TO REPLY TO OWNER: You're way off base here. You clearly didn't spend much time looking into it. Our group did not drink in the parking lot, I was running late and barely had time to tie my shoes let alone tailgate in the lot. One of the members of my group was spotted with a single beer can in the pocket of his bag. He was asked to get rid of it which he did immediately. That should have been the end of it, but instead we were followed around and treated terribly. Do yourself a favor and don't be so defensive. The superintendent over there has been doing an amazing job turning the conditions around, but you're still getting poor reviews because of the proshop staff. ...
Read morePlayed a great round of golf, fair prices, decently taken care of, workers taking care of the course on hole 7 were great and interactive. However, at the end on hole 9 while in an intense scramble and unfortunately losing by one stroke I returned to my cart and settled in. Started to drive about 20ft from the putting green in my golf cart and heard some words from behind me. Turned around in the cart and saw an older man saying something to me but ignored it and pulled up to the parking lot, as I did not owe him a conversation at all. Was then followed and yelled at by this older gentleman about driving âone inchâ from the green which was not true at all, I had spun in a circle to drive back to the lot at the start of the course. This man continued to yell at me and I told him I did not do what he claimed but he was extremely difficult and continued to verbally berate me for 2 minutes. After he left and walked into the club house, I walked back to my car with my bag and friends to which I was approached by another golf cart. The man asked me what had happened in my interaction and told me that the man who had rudely yelled at me was the cart mechanic and that he is ânot always the most tactfulâ. Me and him ended up having a very productive conversation that was entirely respectful and he was helpful in telling me how to avoid this interaction in the future in a helpful way, and thatâs the only reason why this review is so high in stars. I will continue to go to this course because I think it is a good course and have always had a good experience out on the holes, but most of the time have some sort of interaction with the staff that is slightly negative. Would not have written a review if this interaction wasnât so poor, but felt the need to say something after being verbally berated at the end ruining the perfect day of...
Read moreCourse design was fair for the public 9 hole course, but the condition of the course wasn't as good as expected. Too much leaves were on the greens (especially on 5th hole green, pine needles were almost totally covering the green, making it hard to putt). And also many divots on greens (which didn't look like it was repaired everyday). Some teeing areas also needed improvements. But most of all, the man at the pro shop was rude and unfriendly to us. Although I have made payment online for the reservation, he said that I should have paid online for the reservation, and treated me as if I made a big mistake. When I showed him the proof of card payment on my phone, he didn't apologize even though it was the system error.(And receiving only cash for the Youth on course is not understandable since there is no information about it on website and other courses like Newton or Southshore who receives YOC do accept card payment.) Still my kids enjoyed playing and it may be fair to play here for $5 with YOC, but I will not recommend this course for...
