Mame's Shoppe — Local services in Merton

This store is a treasure waiting to be explored. The variety is wonderful. There is a large selection of more unusual and primitive antiques that are in excellent condition. In addition to the antiques, there is a very nice selection of other collectibles that are getting much harder to find. On my last stop in, I was please to find a mail bag style purse in a vintage military style green with a star stitched on the front and the inside lined with blue and cream ticking - it was completely vintage and extremely well done. I just picked up my newest copy of Country Sampler to find that these purses have been featured in the January 2016 issue! In addition to always finding a nice quality treasure, it is a place to just drop in and visit for a moment. The owner, Karen, always remembers who I am and always has a smile and is nice to visit with! Downtown Merton might seem a little off the beaten path but is is worth the stop. I would also recommend the sub shop in the old fire station and stopping in at a Gift of Time - check out the back room for the antique and vintage clocks and there is another area for the old wind up pocket watches as well! We visited Mame's for the first time last week. There are some really nice things there, but the prices are a little on the high side, the owner stated she will not haggle, and the place is in great need of a general cleaning and reorganizing. Some areas were hidden behind the counter and others were very difficult to access. Do not bring a large purse with you or you are likely to knock something over! It's a shame, because like I said she has some cool stuff, and also seems to know the business. My overall feeling is the responsibilities of running the business has gotten to be too much for the current owners who are getting up there in years, which might explain why the place is up for sale. While we were there, there was another couple there who was interested in buying something and offered $20 on a item that was marked $25 - she refused. We were interested in an item that was marked $350, but once she stated she would not haggle, we too left without buying anything. My opinion: this is not the way you want to run an...
