I drive people here all the time, and never been inside myself. After she was in there for a while I figured I'd see what all the hype was about and why people love this place so much. Holy cow did I get one of those shocks in life. I'm going up through the back entrance and thinking it's kind of strange, and that there was nothing real special about it. Then I noticed I'm not even in the store yet as it's up the steps and through another set of doors. I get there and go in and immediately and intensely felt as if I REALLY DID NOT BELONG THERE. By walking in it felt like I'd just stumbled onto a "set" like a movie or show set. That place, not kidding here, seemed more clean, organized, neat, and orderly than an operating room. I literally couldn't believe my eyes. This is an operating store and it's IMMACULATELY CLEAN. At some of the shelves you could almost hold a straight-edge against the side of a label and see them ALL perfectly aligned, stacked on top of each other. I'm thinking it's one of those things like when you look at the menu board at McDonalds and see this perfectly made, delicious, juicy Big Mac. But, how many people on earth have EVER been served a Big Mac that looked like the one on the menu board? Or you see a WalMart commercial on TV. It's always perfectly spotless, well dressed and smiling employees, every product perfectly fronted and faced with not a single thing out of place or missing. In REALITY, though, you go into a WalMart and the clothes section looks like LAPD conducted a raid with clothing tossed all over the place, you have exactly two choices...62X and Microscopic, and INVARIABLY, the ONE THING you've actually gone in there for will 100% guaranteed be out of stock with NOT ONE in the entirety of the 700,000 square foot store. Example, one night I was just dying for French Onion dip and chips. Go grab the chips and head over to the dips in the refrigerated section and NOT A SINGLE ONE...NONE...of ANY SIZE OR BRAND, was there... DIP!!! NONE!! But I walk into Fig Tree, and it was literally like I walked onto the set of an advertising spot shoot!! I'm not exaggerating as you can see by the photos. EVERYTHING was just PERFECT in this place! It was so immaculate that I'd almost have no problem finding the remotest corner of the store and eating my lunch right off the floor. I've NEVER seen a more "showroom perfect" store in all my life. So as I'm browsing, I see all kinds of things like bulk spices, bulk candies like you'd find in the old Montgomery Wards or JC Penney's, or even SEARS! Remember THOSE days?! Then, turn the corner and there's a really nice little deli, spotless, of course. I couldn't take photos in some places because this is an Amish owned and operated store and they don't appreciate photos of their faces being taken for religious reasons so out of respect for the ladies I avoided taking photos where they were. But everything from bulk paper products and spices, flour, sugar and other staples to kitchen utensils and cleaning supplies. This is OBVIOUSLY a place I WILL return to and be spending some money. The most shocking thing of all was the cleanliness and orderliness of the place, though. It was a truly amazing experience and I really hope to see these people rewarded with more people visiting due to the outstanding hard work that's involved in keeping a store in a state of perfection as these ladies do. And, if you think certain things are expensive at the local stores...I won't mention products nor stores because I'd really hate for them to be bombarded with foot traffic simply to swarm and hoard these specific products that they carry for WELL BELOW HALF the price of the other local stores. But, believe me when I tell you, you'd be very surprised that a Mom & Pop store could carry these items EVERYBODY is complaining about being so expensive when this place has them for what you'd pay eight years ago!! Here is yet another fine example of "never judge a book by its cover" because the entrance is not what it's...
Read moreThird stop on our road trip. We learned there is a big difference between "bulk foods" and "salvage" foods. With bulk foods, the vendor may buy 500 pounds of flour, then divide it into 5 pound bags for sale. For salvage, the vendors may buy a pallet of 5 pound bags of flour that were torn. Given the Amish proclivity toward cleanliness and neatness, the bulk food stores are neat, colorful and a lot more expensive. Fig Tree had a wonderful selection of foods, candies, candy making and baking supplies. And a small deli with call-ahead option. And a clean and convenient rest room....
