I recently visited New York Dress Company after being highly recommended by the bride, mother of the bride, and sister of the bride for an upcoming wedding. Unfortunately, I did not have an appointment, but given the urgency of my situation—my dress ordered online was lost in the mail—I decided to try my luck.
I arrived at 6:15 PM, 45 minutes before closing, and was warmly greeted by the first associate. She kindly explained that the store operates by appointment only and suggested I try to book online. When I mentioned there were no slots left for the day, she offered to check if someone could help me, either that evening or the next morning.
A second associate also came out and was just as sweet and understanding. She greeted me with a friendly “Hi girl, how can I help you?” I explained my situation, emphasizing I wasn’t picky and only needed something simple, plain, and black. Both of these associates were so kind and accommodating despite my last-minute visit.
Unfortunately, my experience took a turn when another associate—who never introduced herself—spoke to me from a doorway with an unnecessarily harsh and condescending tone. She repeatedly pointed out that it was “6:16” and that they had just finished their last appointment. Her demeanor felt dismissive and unprofessional, which was off-putting and completely changed the atmosphere.
As a business owner, I deeply value customer service and understand the challenges that come with last-minute requests, especially near closing time. However, kindness and professionalism cost nothing. While I greatly appreciated the efforts of the first two associates, the attitude of the third ultimately led me to walk out. Despite desperately needing a dress, I refuse to be spoken to in such a manner and I’m sure she would’ve spoken to me with some respect if she knew who I was.
This review is not written lightly, as I typically never leave negative feedback. I believe that how you make a customer feel—regardless of the circumstances—leaves a lasting impression, and professionalism should always be a priority. I hope this feedback can be used constructively to ensure every customer feels welcomed and respected, even in less-than-ideal scenarios.
I’m sorry for the negative review for this business that I hear nothing but good things about, but having associates that treat customers with...
Read moreI just wanted to send many thanks to Mia, James, & Kim who literally saved me this past weekend! I was attending a very elegant wedding that called for black tie formal wear. I was having a custom dress made and received it the day before we were headed out of town to attend the wedding. The dress arrived and was a complete disaster. I had ordered a dress from NY dress 6 years ago for my wedding and since the wedding was in NJ, I said I would make the trip to the storefront to find something to wear. Fast forward I arrive in Jersey and make the 1+ hour drive to Queens to find the studio. I arrive and call for someone to open the door for me, to be told that the studio was by appt only and they were booked for the next 2 weeks. Now why that never crossed my mind in the middle of a pandemic that maybe I would need to make an appt, is beyond me!!!! But I also needed a dress for the next day. I called back and began to plead and explain my dilemma to James, and he immediately agreed to help me. I could have cried. Mia was my sales consultant and immediately upon seeing me, pulled gowns that were so ME! The first gown was my first choice but my size was not available. I tried on about 5 dresses and narrowed them down to two. Now here is where I was thoroughly impressed: when I asked Mia, James, & Kim to help me decide on a final dress, they honestly chose the less expensive of the two. I was shocked, I thought they would recommend the more expensive dress for sales purposes, but they didn’t and I was thankful. The dress fit me like a glove and I was the belle of the ball. People stopped me repeatedly just to tell me how stunning I looked! I received compliments allll evening! Thank you James for being kind in a moment where I was completely panicking. Mia thank you for being a wonderful and patient sales consultant! And thank you Kim for your reassurance! NY DRESS you have a forever...
Read moreI give them two stars only because James was great, sweet, and helpful. And I was able to select the dress I liked. However, if I knew what was going to happen after, I would never come here.
The dress was dirty, and I got a discount on it. James said it needed some minor alterations and gave me the phone number of a seamstress Heidi. As far as I was concerned about the dress, dry cleaning was my priority. I bought the dress on Thursday night and needed it by Sunday.
I connected with Heidi, who said that she'd do alterations and cleaning for me. Because I raised my concerns about the cleaningness of the dress and my priority to do that instead of alterations, she was fully aware of my situation but told me to come in the morning to Queens.
To make a long story short, I spent over $200 on Uber to bring the dress on Friday morning before my work and then to pick up late at night. When I brought the dress home, I realized, Heidi (real name Hatice) not only didn't clean it, she didn't fix one of the most important parts - missing hooks that are essential for me to be able to wear the dress (see pics). She did a poor job with alterations (threads are sticking out). There are marks from a red pencil she used. And she charged me $220!!! I called her, and she sent me back $40. Nevertheless, it's Saturday before the ceremony. My day is planned to the minute. And I don't have a dress I can wear.
I recommend the New York Dress for buying dresses but stay away from their referrals....
