SOMA Cakes NYC — Local services in New York

My mom ordered a custom cake for my birthday from Soma cakes. First of all, the cake was absolutely DELICIOUS. I mean seriously fantastic. There’s a very famous cake place in Chelsea I used to order from - not anymore!

Second of all, the lady who delivered it (I didn’t get her name) was so sweet - I was half asleep opening the door, but even in my groggy state I remember she was SO excited when she told me happy birthday that it still makes me smile days later :)

Thirdly (and this is information from my mom), Soma truly went above and beyond to create my cake. My mom apparently called no less than 10 bakeries looking for anyone who could make a White Forest cake (which is basically a Black Forest cake just with white chocolate & vanilla cake) and got canned responses from every single one of them - even the ones who sold Black Forest cakes! - who refused to deviate even slightly from their menu.

Soma was the only place that jumped to the task and they did an AMAZING job. Also they were very concerned with the high delivery charge (Brooklyn address) via an external service, which is why I believe the lady my mom spoke to is the one who delivered it personally instead - which is so so so nice! Thank you SO much for the delicious cake, and a million more Thank You’s for making my birthday so special (White Forest has been my favourite cake since I was little, but is literally impossible to find in North America so the last time I had it was for my 15th birthday a decade ago). I almost cried when I saw what was in the box. You are ALL amazing and I will be recommending you to everyone I know!

Edit: I just saw a yelp review where the celebrant’s mom called and asked Soma to use her personal recipe so her daughter could have a cake that tastes like home - and they did it. I mean WHO DOES THAT?!! This place is an absolute GEM, and deserves all the fame I’m sure they will get in the...

If we could give Hiroyo and Soma Cakes 10 stars out of five, we would. We found out about Soma Cakes after a bad experience with our previous wedding cake designer. We were nervous and hoping that things would go smoothly this time around.

From the start, Hiroyo was fantastic! She is so kind and welcoming (and has an adorable kid too!), and was willing to sit down with us as many times as we needed. She was patient and thoughtful as we described the wedding cake we were imagining, and offered suggestions based on her expertise and experience.

Hiroyo also has incredible, and we mean incredible, talent as a baker and artist. We requested a unique flavor of cake that is very non-traditional. Although Hiroyo had never attempted the flavor before, she nailed it on her first try, and we were blown away at our cake tasting appointment! Hiroyo then provided a beautiful sketch of our wedding cake--a design surpassed only by the real thing.

The cake itself was beautifully crafted, and tasted amazing. We can't thank Hiroyo enough for her hospitality, her talent, and for how engaged she was throughout the whole process. If Yelp would allow, I would give this baker 10 stars. Satoko and her team don't make cakes, they make masterpieces. We hired her to create a custom Paw Patrol themed birthday cake for my son's 5th birthday party. She was extremely easy to work with and very responsive via e-mail. We asked for her suggestions regarding the design and she was able to give us multiple options. We made changes to the order several times and she was always extremely accommodating. The day of the party, the cake was delivered right on time and, as you can see from the picture, it was literally a work of art. The cake was a showstopper and just about every parent wanted to know who made it. The most magical moment was when my son saw his birthday cake.....his little eyes got as big as pancakes and he said "WOW!"
