A routine cyst excision with Dr. Anny Xiao left me with an open, non healing wound for two months. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!
The excision was done on 3/22/23 at Newport Cove Dermatology by Dr. Anny Xiao with follow up care done at affiliate location Laguna Dermatology by Dr. Channual and PA Rasha. I had an ingrown hair on my bikini line that unfortunately developed into a painful, inflamed cyst. Steroid injections into the area helped for a short time then the painful cyst would return. I scheduled to have it removed by Dr. Anny Xiao.
During the procedure, there was a male staff member assisting Dr. Xiao. While the stitches were being placed, I heard the male assistant say “Oops” and whatever work he and Dr. Xiao were doing was stopped. Then they restarted and he again said “Oops” and they stopped working. This is highly unprofessional and extremely concerning to hear while you’re having minor surgery. I was laying on my back during the procedure and was unable to see what they were doing. Who exactly was placing the stitches- the doctor or the assistant?!
As instructed, I left the bandage on for 24 hours then asked my husband to help me clean the wound and change the dressing. He removed the bandage and remarked “Huh, they didn’t stitch this closed?” I looked down at the incision and saw there were no stitches holding the incision closed. Just an open incision on my bikini line, making it highly susceptible to infection. There was a black string which I assume was supposed to be used to stitch the excision closed laying next to the incision, not anchored down or holding anything closed. I called to make an appointment with the doctor and the soonest appointment was at affiliate location Laguna Dermatology. I was seen by PA Rasha and I’ll never forget the horrified look on her face when she removed the dressing and asked, “Where are the stitches???” She then asked Dr. Channual to come in and examine the situation. I was told that it was too late now to properly stitch the excision closed and that it would heal on its own. I was given a steroid shot into the area and sent on my way.
Over the next several weeks, I diligently kept the area clean and dry- not an easy task when the excision was on my bikini line, an area prone to friction from clothes and sweat. The wound was painful and not healing. Each time I went in for follow up visits, I asked why it wasn’t healing. And each time I was given more steroid shots into the area and sent on my way without any logical explanation. Seven weeks had gone by and the wound was still painful and hadn’t closed. I asked PA Rasha to order an ultrasound or some sort of diagnostic imaging (and I work in diagnostic imaging) to see if there was an underlying abscess or abnormality. She denied the request and said we would discuss it in a week at my next visit. Are you joking??? A botched surgery job by your colleague left me with an open, non healing wound for seven weeks and you want me to wait another week before we even discuss ordering an ultrasound or any sort of test to see what’s happening??? I was done with this place and these doctors.
I made an appointment with the wound care specialists at Hoag and provided them with my medical records from Newport Cove and Laguna Dermatology. The wound care surgeon was appalled by the number of steroid injections that had been done to the excision and the many rounds of antibiotics they ordered for me. The wonderful doctors at Hoag had my wound closed and infection free in a little over two weeks- all WITHOUT any steroid shots or prescribed antibiotics.

If I could give Ali a crown and declare her the Queen of All Things Skin, I would. But since Google doesn’t let me do that (rude), this review will have to do. If you’re even considering treating yourself to next-level skin care, stop what you’re doing and book with Ali—your future, glowing self will thank you.
From the moment I walked into Newport Cove Dermatology & Aesthetics, I felt like I had stepped into a sanctuary of radiant skin and good vibes. Ali isn’t just a dermatology PA—she’s a skin whisperer, a magician, a literal guardian angel for anyone battling the relentless march of time. I came in for a full assessment of my skin (which, let’s be real, was crying for some love), and she immediately put me at ease. She’s warm, knowledgeable, and has that rare ability to make you feel like the most important person in the room.
After a thorough analysis of my face (aka the aging battlefield), Ali wasted no time getting to work. She treated me with lasers—because why fight aging when you can zap it into submission?—and let me tell you, I walked out of there looking like I had been bathed in the glow of a thousand soft-lit filters. My skin? Radiant. My confidence? Through the roof. My only regret? Not finding her sooner.
But Ali didn’t stop there. She crafted a custom treatment plan that was equal parts science-backed and completely tailored to my face. No cookie-cutter nonsense—just real, effective solutions to keep my skin thriving. She explained everything in a way that made sense (no intimidating medical jargon here) and made sure I felt empowered, not overwhelmed.
So, if you’ve been thinking about investing in your skin but don’t know where to start—Ali Grean is your girl. She’s the skincare fairy godmother we all deserve, and thanks to her, I left feeling like a goddess with a glow so bright it should come with a warning label.

Read moreI wish I could say I had a great experience here, but after multiple treatments, I left with a bigger problem than I came in with. Following a cyst excision with Dr Xiao and subsequent laser treatments intended to minimize scarring, I was left with a larger, more noticeable scar on my face.
After the excision, I experienced complications and called the office, only to be told this was normal. At my follow-up, however, it became clear the complications were not normal at all. While this was eventually addressed, subsequent laser treatments left my scar red, swollen, and irritated. I was again told this was normal, but I sought a second opinion with Dr. Azi (@skinbydrazi) at La Jolla Dermatology and Laser Surgery Center.
Dr. Azi informed me that my scar was very irritated, had spread, and advised me to stop laser treatments to avoid further scarring. This was deeply concerning, as I had trusted the original office to guide me appropriately. Months later, I’m still pursuing treatments to improve my scar.
In addition, I wasn’t realistically informed about my treatment outcomes or my scar’s progression, and I felt the office lacked attentive support. To make matters worse, I later noticed I was double-billed for some treatments—once out of pocket and again to my insurance. Despite reaching out to the office months ago, I have yet to receive a response.
I understand that not all treatments go as planned, but the lack of communication, guidance, and proper billing left me deeply disappointed. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this office based on...
