Hmong American Supermarket — Local services in Newton

(THIS REVIEW WAS MEANT FOR A YEAR AGO) I love oriental food. I love buying it and looking up recipes on how to make certain dishes so I thought I'd give this place a try. The food was great. A good selection. My only complaint is the customer service was horrible. And I'm guessing it's because I'm not oriental. But I could be mistaken. Anyways when I went in I was ignored and not greeted like the other two ladies and gentleman who were in the store of Asian descent. I went to check out once I shopped around and wasn't even asked if I found everything ok she just started ringing things up then told me my total and asked if I was using EBT (go figure!) after I told her no I was using cash she got an attitude and huffed her little breath like it's crazy a black person uses cash and is not paying with food stamps. I told her to have a nice day afterwards and she didn't even say anything just handed me my change and that was it. I'm going to be looking for a new place to buy my oriental...

My visit was on 3/19/23, it's been two days. I have contemplated over writing a review or not. I'm not from NC, but visit the area from time to time. This is not my first time at this store either, but the worst experience I have ever had here. Maybe from prior times I had a better experience because I was with my parents. My parents knows the owners family. My personal experience on Sunday was far from my prior experiences. We walked in and no hello or welcome, the owners wife looked, but that's it. Be pleasant when you have a small Hmong store.

When I thought not getting a hello seemed unwelcoming I got a even better reason not to visit this place again. When checking out she ASKED ME TO BAG MY OWN GROCERIES! She scanned all the items and looked at me then told me bags are there. This is NOT a self checkout line. Yes, I bagged my own groceries and left. I will not be supporting the store in the future. Poor customer service, no respect for your paying...

I was surprised that this Hmong market has mostly an assortment of Thai ingredients that we couldn't find in other places. The most outstanding produces were fresh vegetables. The owner explained that they get their products from Hmong farmers around the area several times a week.
