I've sewn before but, never used a clothing pattern and wanted to learn. After searching on the internet I came across Mikala's website and poked around. I saw that she was offering a craft class that didn't involve sewing but, spiked my interest. This allowed me to meet Mikala, take a craft course I was interested in and see how I felt about traveling to her shop. Her shop is easy to get to, it has plenty of room for everyone in class and it's very organized but, friendly. After taking that class I knew I wanted to sign up for her sewing lessons. Because I had sewn bedfore Mikala recommended I start with a 102 level class. She taught us how to read a pattern for the materials and supplies we needed, what the symbols meant and how to use the pattern with our material etc. Even though everyone in the class worked on something different we all learned from each others projects. My project involved making my own ruffle, turning a tie strap and using elastic others involved interfacing and adjustments to patterns. Each time something new was to be learned Mikala called us all over so we could learn the process too for future use. Mikala is friendly, warm and a great, patient teacher. I tend to be shy when I don't know people and she instantly made me feel comfortable and at ease. After completing my project I signed up for her hidden zipper class. We each learned how to sew a hidden zipper onto a pillow case we had just sewn and we all walked away with a pillow covered with our new tricks! This past weekend I took a paper cutting class with an instructor Mikala had come in and loved that too! I'm now starting Mikala's 103 class and will be making a wall organizer for my craft room/office at home. It involves learning how to sew bias tape, vinyl and interfacing. All new to me! I'm looking forward to it. If anyone wants to take sewing lessons - I can't say enough about Mikala's classes! They are well organized, informative and fun! Thanks Mikala - Looking forward to starting my...
Read moreI found Mikala's sewing lessons after doing a little research and reading reviews online. She offers many levels of classes but since I was basically brand new to sewing, I took her beginning 5 session course. She is very welcoming and very patient with her students... I was new to town (just moved from CA) and late the first class. Although I felt horrible she assured me it was o.k. and quickly got me up to speed on the first lesson. By the way, if you don't have your own machine, you can use one at the studio, it's $5 to use the whole course. I actually wound up buying an old school one Mikala was selling and was able to use that during the course and get to know how to use it. She's got a pseudo-museum going on of sewing gadgets, machines, as well as examples of her finished projects, throughout the studio.
After 5 classes I can gladly say it was worth while. I highly recommend her class as she is very one on one if you need help... and I did because I cut a few pieces wrong and she able to troubleshoot, saved the botched fabric from the trash and in the end it was fairly easy and came out looking professional. Mikala constantly gives the class her insider tips from her own experiences, which makes her classes a cut above the rest (pun intended :). Also, we came home with 2 finished projects, a cowl scarf, and a tote bag, and step-by-step instructions she created for us to do again at home.
I gave the tote bag to my Mom for Christmas and she didn't cry but I could tell it meant a lot to her. She showed it to my grandma back in CA and she was shocked that I made it... I'm a mini-pro now, thanks to Mikala :)
Enjoy her classes and soak up...
Read moreI knew absolutely nothing about sewing and even less about my sewing machine. I felt it was just a "Pipe Dream" to learn as I feel so challenged with straight lines! If I could give Mikala (the owner/instructor) 100 stars, I would. She made my "pipe dream" a reality and then some. She is so patient and no matter what goofy mistake I made she made me feel like it was just all part of the learning process. When you walk out of each class it is with a wealth of knowledge and a feeling that you ARE creative! I have taken sewing 101, sewing patterns 102, doggie accessories, decoupage, invisible zipper and stitch and slash all since September. I am registered for the Restorative Yoga class and can't wait. She just doesn't teach you and send you on your way she will take the time to answer your emails if you have a question about a certain project. So knowledgeable and very patient. Doesn't matter what type of machine you have she knows how to thread it! She also supplies machines if you need one. You walk out of class with names of fabric stores in the area and even a guy that fixes sewing machines. (Joe is fantastic!) I can sum this review up by quoting another student as we were walking out of class. She said "Every time I leave one of Mikala's classes I feel so relaxed and great!" Unusual quote for a "class" but oh so true! You can't go wrong scheduling a class at Creative...
